Illuminating

As a beginning student of philosophy, I had to take my time with this book and read it carefully. Prof. Vlastos writes very clearly and makes his arguments step by step so that there is no mistaking his point, which you are then able to judge for yourself. He is persuasive, not dogmatic, but you have to be able to follow his train of reasoning.

In my opinion, it is unfair to accuse Prof. Vlastos of "special pleading", that is, presenting only evidence that supports his own arguments. Vlastos spent his life studying Socrates, and no doubt developed strong feelings for the object of his study, but it seems to me that he goes to great lengths to acknowledge evidence contradicting his own conclusions. But Vlastos makes his points very thoroughly, so if you want to quibble with him you have to have your own ducks in a row.

Vlastos covers the following topics:

- Socratic Irony.

- The "Socratic problem" - what we can know about Socrates as an actual historical figure, as opposed to the various impressions handed down to us by Aristophanes, Plato, Xenophon, and others.

- The shift from the Socratic method ("elenchus") to mathematics in Plato's middle dialogues.

- Does Socrates cheat? (Yes, but only in jest.)

- Socrates' religious beliefs. (He believed in his "daimonion", but was not a mystic.)

- Socrates' rejection of the "lex talionis". (I found this to be by far the most interesting chapter, Socrates articulating the "Golden Rule" 400 years before Christ.)

- An explication of Socrates' theory that Happiness and Virtue are identical.

Vlastos concludes that Socrates, believing what he believed, died a happy man.

Anyone interested in philosophy will benefit from spending a few hours with Professor Gregory Vlastos and his friend, Socrates.

Best study of Socrates available at present

Gregory Vlastos was the most celebrated scholar of classical Greek philosophy in the last third of the twentieth century, if not the most important of the past hundred years. Virtually every major project in Platonic studies since 1960 has been in some way informed by him. For the reason of the maginitude of his scholarship alone, one really cannot go wrong with this book, in my opinion, one of his best.
What made Vlastos such a seminal figure is demonstrated abundantly in this study: 1) his ability to identify, elucidate, and interpret, in the light of the relevant contexts, the defining issues; 2) his closely reasoned justification for those interpretations.
The book is really a collection of papers and lectures extending from the late 1950's through the 1980's which illumine Vlastos' position that Socrates was "... the first to establish the eudaemonist foundation of ethical theory which becomes common ground for all the schools that sprung up around him, and more; he is the founder of the non-instrumentalist form of eudaemonism held in common by the Platonists, Aristotelians, Cynics, and Stoics, i.e. of all Greek moral pholosophers except the Epicureans."
As noted, Vlastos gives detailed insights into the elements of Socrates' moral theory and method of argument. The famous paper, "Socratic Irony", which opens the book (23 pages) is by far the most informative I have read on the subject, and, as Vlastos shows us, indispensible for understanding both Socratic moral theory and method of argument. A perfect source for undergraduate papers on these subjects, as well.
Chapter 7, "Socrates' Rejection of Retaliation" is very likely the most important work on this crucial subject at the heart of Socratic moral theory and sine qua non for any deeper understanding of Socrates and his "mission" (he articulated the "Golden Rule" 400 + years before Christ). In it (page 198), Vlastos claims: "In saying that it is never good to do a wrong, and making this the foundational reason for breaking with the accepted morality, Socrates must be using the word in its most inclusive sense. He must be saying: 'If an act of yours will wrong another, then it is bad for you, the agent, so bad that no good it offers could compensate you for its evil for you.'"
The final chapter "Happiness and Virtue in Socrates' Moral Theory", is the cumulation of nearly half a century of research, and again, a benchmark in Socratic studies. The same is felt universally by those professionally involved in such work: here is seminal, accessible scholarship on a subject which nearly 2,500 years since its original articulation still imperatively commands our attention.

Not enough new information.

Having read the original Quarterly Essay about Tony Abbott, I have to say that I was a little disappointed in this updated, non Quarterly Essay.

If you haven't read the original article, then this is definitely worth reading to find out more about the possible future PM of Australia.

For those that don't know much about Tony Abbott and his rather interesting past (which is rooted in grubby and violent student politics of the late 1970's), Tony Abbott essentially hated anyone who wasn't of DLP persuasion - this includes homosexuals, feminists and those who were pro choice when it comes to abortion.

Tony Abbott now claims that he is a changed man and that what he did 30 or so years ago is no longer relevant.

Thanks to this book, that is up to you to decide.

About the Author
Takerra Allen is the author of eleven urban-romance titles, including the 2010 African American Literary Award nominated hit novel, Heaven's Hell. In addition to being an author, she is the proud daughter of former Black Panther William Garland and sister to the late, renowned Tupac Shakur. 'She don't make me feel like you, on the real she ain't you...you, you, you'

Alazo Moore rokked your soul in V1 with his Billy Dee Williams suave-nicity and a swag that superseded the Richter Scale. Well, fasten your seat belts with a deadbolt because Trent Davis, hmmph!!! Prepare yourself to be enamored with the passion and plight of this charismatic d-boy, this doting dad, this MIA husband that has arisen from the dead...one even calls him a 'zombie.' He left us with erratic emotions in V1...in V2- he will massacre all judgments and prejudiced opinions on this new trek of an authentic hustla. Zombie portrays stoic and bland...but the emotions Mr. Davis will elicit will electrify, electrocute, and burn every thread off of any mummie's garbs.

V1 brought us mountains of griefs to bear...unbearable heartache and just when we didn't think we could lift our heads...we were blessed with a miracle showing that GOD did indeed love the Bell Family. Then we are slapped with the revelation that the dead had indeed arisen although death never captured our charming Trent. Multifacted Trent Davis is in Italy playing house with his firstborn, his only son & the needy Gianna all for the sake of knowing his only son, his firstborn child and one last hope that one day...someday he may see his beloved 3 Bell Babies. Sounds twisted...what about you living but not because you feel that void, that hole that only one woman could fill. You live with the guilt of what your choices caused the loves of your life. You've lost so much and although you are alive, you are indeed the walking dead. Across the world, a heartbroken wife is trying to piece together her life without the only man she's ever loved and live for the sake of the 3 babies they created all in the name of Real Love. Meanwhile Val and Alazo are engaged, living the fabulous life of the marvelous in a mansion decorated in Valerie Bell's expensive taste, doting on their love child, Alana and welcoming Quishawn into their immaculate world. What happens when all presumptions are reversed? What happens when what you've prayed for...begged GOD for...wished upon many a star for...actually is granted? Are you ecstactic and life becomes blissfully surreal? Takerra Allen is a phenomenal writer with skills that words cannot describe! V2: More Power is a great story. Ms. Allen paints vivid pictures with her words that allow readers to feel what each character feels. Without giving anything away, I loved that each character experienced a conflict that allowed them to either grow or stand up and face each challenge like a man or woman. Each character had to exhibit strength in order to fight battles that could have ruined them. This book was filled with wisdom and I found myself highlighting passages that contained a message or a life lesson. This book was entertaining, it was heart wrenching, its was riveting, it was though provoking, it was emotional. V2: More Power was excellent!

Totally Worth The Wait!!!

Words can't describe how much I really enjoyed this book. Takerra is a phenomenal writer with the ability to transform mere words to create a lasting impression. These are not just characters in a book but people you become connected to through out the story. I personally begged for V2 (with FB messages to prove) because I knew Takerra would deliver. No Spoilers Here.... But I will say you will not be disappointed. Every question is answered and every thought is confirmed. This is definitely my best read in 2015! With that said, if you are reading reviews to determine if you should purchase this book.... Buy it Today! Oh and "Do Better". DBGrant
