Valuable resource

There are some books which can be informative, and those which are inspirational. This book is all that and more. It's useful. It's probably the best resource for a karate instructor for planing a coherente training schedule, and a teaching strategy.

It's clear, based on sound experience -the author learned with the best of the best, at the SKIF Hombu Dojo- and based on clear concepts.

Truth to be said, I am not a karate instructor. However, I believe that if you plan to become one yourself, this book will certainly help.

I firmly belive this book to be a valuable resource for spreding karate and its benefits -which go beyond self defense- throughout the world.

This is a great book and we'll worth the read if you are into Shotokan karate. Paul Walkers training at the SKIFF Honbu HQ dojo for three years in Tokyo, under the guidance of Kancho Kanazawa and his senior Instructors, is something many of us wish we had the opportunity to do. A great insight into the Shotokan training experience. Although a diary of Paul's experience and with lots of very interesting comments, this is also good reference material for us Shotokan instructors.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Letters and Papers from Prison show the reader the thoughts of a man who wrote with immense insight under circumstances fraught with the deepest despair. Prior to the war, Bonhoeffer had established himself as a visionary, if somewhat moderate, young Christian theologian. His imprisonment by the Nazis in the wake of the failure of the conspiracy to assasinate Hitler gave rise to this series of letters, ranging from the trivial to the most profound, reflecting the thoughts and ideas of a man whose ideas continued to evolve, even as hope dwindled. It is tempting to see Bonhoeffer as a sort of modern Christian saint "set-piece" of a man, or a Spielberg movie waiting to be made. Such an interpretation of the man would trivialize the flesh and blood reality of his life, as these letters demonstrate. Collections of letters typically suffer from one of two defects--either they are inanely trivial and gossippy, or they spend far too much time on being "literary" for posterity, and not enough time giving real insight into the writer. Bonhoeffer's letters avoid both of these traps. Although the letters collection is not overly burdened by the confessional, letters to his parents and fiance help us understand in very human terms the horror of imprisonment by the Nazis, notwithstanding their careful phrasing to avoid the censor's pen. The letters do contain some of the intentionally "literary"--Bonhoeffer writes poetry which is reasonably spare and connective and sometimes writes for the hypothetical future reader. But the real tour de force is Bonhoeffer's analysis of the evolution of his theological thought in light of the changes wrought by modernity and made apparent to him through his experiences. In several reasonably succinct but incredibly sweeping letters, he outlines a new vision of Christianity, a form of post-Christian Christianity if you will, which has generated a half century of debate and provided inspiration to Christian and non-Christian alike. In this age in which "liberal" religion has been sadly equated by some with "flaccid" religion, we see through these letters a deeply disciplined thinker outlining the way for Christianity to remain relevant in a world all too ready to try to "outgrow" the faith. Although his thinking is complex, and in some instances he assumes a base of knowledge of late 19th C and early 20th C. Christian theology the 21st C. casual reader may not have, the letters are quite accessible and profoundly human. This is not a man building a neat construct out of his dissertation. This is a condemned man hinting at the blueprint for the transformation of a faith. Although it is tempting to suggest that this is a "Christian masterpiece" of 20th C. faith, the suggestion is a disservice. This is a masterpiece of literature which transcends genre or faith. In the interminable list of intellectual heroes of the 20th C., we rarely see Pastor Bonhoeffer among the honorees. But this book is a powerful argument that this man, who saw the need for religious people to use religion less as a crutch and more as a transformation, should be included prominently in our intellectual heroes list.

An excellent selfportrait of Bonhoeffer, a Lutheran minister, while in a nazi German prison during the war.
It reveals the immense power of the spirit that helps us go through the most cruel experiences life can have awaiting for us. My first book by Bonhoeffer and I am glad I started with this one. What a great man!

The Theater of the Absurd Strikes Again!

"The Dumbwaiter" (1957) is a long one-act play by Harold Pinter displaying his Theater of the Absurd traits, but in a more tightly focused view than in some of his other work. Ben and Gus are waiting in a play reminiscent of Beckett's "Waiting for Godot" (1952). They are like Estragon and Vladimir in the Beckett play except those two hapless souls are still waiting.
Ben and Gus are sticking around to do a job, something sinister, apparently a killing, but these two hit men, if that's what they are, are rather pathetic. There's an antipathy between the two. They have revolvers. In the claustrophobic set, a basement room, the two men get cryptic and hilarious food order notes from the dumbwaiter up above. They send up little snacks that Gus had brought with him (the food proves to be unsatisfactory). A speaking tube also connects them with whomever. Ben is the leader, and his cohort Gus seems like a fumbling clownish oaf.
As usual the dialogue has its comic riffs, repetitiveness and inanity. The two petty criminal are under the direction of a boss just as Goldberg and McCann were in Pinter's "The Birthday Party".
What happens is puzzling and baffling in this dark comedy. There is an undertone of violence with terror lurking. Neither character is quite sure of anything. Things are unnerving, uncertain, and menacing. The unknown is often scarier than the unknown. In a Pinter play people don't seem to be able to exert their wills; they are manipulated and toyed with just as Pinter is manipulating and toying with the audience.
It has been said that Pinter's characters lack sympathy for each other, spirituality or any craving for it. It's an existential world. The evil presence offstage must be obeyed. It's a mystery within an enigma, but fun for adventurous theatergoers.

You get a bit out of your depth sometimes, don't you?

One review, until now, is pathetic. This book, featuring two of the absurd, menacing, weighty master's early works is terrific.

The Caretaker, along with The Homecoming, The Birthday Party and Old Times is one of Pinter's best, ultimately important, works. It is in my opinion one of the great post-WWII English plays.

The Dumb Waiter, similar to The Caretaker in it's setting and brother-like characters, while being a long one-act, is creepier still and more enigmatic.

The Caretaker is about a vagabond named Davies, who is taken into a run-down room in a run-down house by Aston, who lives there, and collects things in it, and is the brother of Mick, who owns the building. Initially the relationship between Davies and Aston is kind, generous and progressive. Davies, used to trudging through life homeless is taken aback at the trust and goodwill offered by Aston. When Mick arrives later, Davies must feel out the differing attitude, as Mick looks after his brother, and isn't so easily trusting of the ragged and scruffy Davies. But eventually Aston seems odd (and delivers an amazing monologue testifying to his possible insanity), and Mick more level headed, and both at different times offer Davies a job in the house, as Caretaker.
But Pinter being Pinter, the goodwill is possibly unreal, or something else entirely. There is a vague confusion to the play, a lack of specifics, and the characters, in classic masculine style, only say what they think they need to, i.e.:

Davies: What do you do-? What do you do...when the bucket's full?
Pause.
Aston: Empty it.
Pause.

Davies, somewhat boxed into the house by weather and possibility never knows his place, as the brothers, who rarely are in the room together, keep him off balance. The truth becomes elusive, as do the facts. One never knows one's place, or how each feels about the other. A scary moment comes when Davies, flustered by the erratic behavior of Aston, calls him "nutty" to his brother, Mick. To which Mick replies: "You get a bit out of your depth sometimes, don't you?"

The Dumb Waiter is more absurd then The Caretaker. Two guys, possibly hitmen, possibly waiters, staying in a basement room, awaiting orders to do something, must contend with a dumb waiter that begins to descend with notes requesting food. The room clearly not a kitchen, and they not sure what is going on upstairs, instead put the little food they have in the dumb waiter, which ascends and descends several times. The trapped nature of Gus and Ben lends that Pinter menace to the story. Each has a gun, and seems ready to kill. But a lack of information, either known to them, or expressed by them so we know, keeps the lid on the proverbial pot.

These both are classic plays. I highly recommend this book.

Outstanding miniature study in character (No spoiler)

The Caretaker is an excellent Pinter play where his famous deliberate pacing is used to tell the story of a power struggle between a homeless man trying to manipulate his way into taking over a house. For the Caretaker, Davies, it is the hope of a place to stay a roof over his head. For the older brother, MIck it's a chance to make something of a house gone to waste. The younger mentally disturbed brother, the most vulnerable, is at the mercy of his brother Mick. The play is a fascinating balance of power as the pendulum swings towards one and then the other. No one is really sure who is in charge of the situation until the very end.

About the Author
As a baby boomer and retired physician I’m devoting my time to writing medical thrillers. Like all my novels true lifetime situations is interwoven with suspenseful and intriguing storylines. I spent most of my life in Massachusetts and schooling leading up to both an MD and PhD in medicine and directed medical research for the last 20 years of my healthcare career with drug development in major pharmaceutical companies. I love crime drama as attested by WHO WILL WEEP FOR ME and my historical Post-Civil War medical thriller COTTER explores American medicine and justice from 1868-1872. Thought Provoking and Riveting!

My Name is Kevin is the story of Kevin Dowd, a thug that robs ATM machines. And of course there is the police, or in this case Detective Doreen Pousant, investigating the crimes. I like Doreen and can relate to her character. Much of the setting occurs around AA meetings, and I learned some key points about addiction.
My Name is Kevin is a novel for the times (Islamic extremist) that we live in and is thought-provoking. It is a reminder that local crime may not be black and white as it first appears when mixed with terrorism, which often has global roots. I was drawn, page by page, by a crime that turned into a global scheme against banking. This novel is an honest portrait of a world in constant change.

I enjoyed this book. It is riveting and easy to imagine carrying over to Headline News. I highly recommend it.

Good for the novice

We utilized this text for a graduate level course. I found it to be well worded and a good introductory text. I do not have much experience with other books on this subject, so it is hard to make fair comparisons. The authors are competent in describing the lessons and present seemingly plausible case scenarios.
