The writing of this book took place over the course of several years when the author was studying the viola with Lillian Fuchs. His weekly conversations provided a wealth of anecdotal stories, many of them publicly shared here, with Ms. Fuchs?s consent, for the first time.Amedee Daryl Williams, violist, has performed throughout the United Sates and Canada in solo, chamber, and orchestral roles. He holds the MA degree in music performance from the Mannes College of Music and the MBA in finance from Lubin School of Business at Pace University. In addition to performing, teaching, and conducting, he also serves as president of the William Lincer Foundation.

Biography of a great artist

Lillian Fuchs was not only a fine violist, but was a great teacher and mentor to many, many musicians. In this book the author, who clearly admires and loves his subject, unearths many details about her life, her approach to her instrument and her teaching philosophy.
Unfortunately the book is rather clumsily written and the subject never really comes to life. I studied with Miss Fuchs for five years and got to know her very well. This book, though it contains many facts, completely misses her unique personality, her probing mind, and most of all, her rich sense of humor.

Life of a Performer, but not of the woman

I remember hearing Ms. Fuchs play the Vaughan-Williams' "Flos Campi" in a church in Minneapolis, when I was in High School. It had not been advertised well, and was not hugely attended, but it has remained for me, one of the transformative musical events of my life. To hear Lillian Fuchs play was like nothing else I have ever heard, and I wanted this book to 'fill me in' on the woman, as well as the violist. Sadly, all this book is, is in the vein of the old Applebaum 'The Way they Play' series; a chronological series of concerts, reviews, events, and not much more. Thank goodness there are some photos, but the work could have been much more interesting of slices of the artist's personal life- her children, her other interests, even correspondences, had been included in the revision/subsequent printing of this book, which I now possess. Perhaps Mr. Williams did not dare broach those subjects with his teacher, but the book would be far more interesting if had done so….

A reasonable length, very readable biography of one of the most talented and influential violists in history. If you play the viola, or share a house with someone who does, this book will fill you in on the life of someone who could be considered a matriarch of the field (along with Rebecca Clarke).

Fantastic read. Especially for aspiring ad designers

Fantastic read. Especially for aspiring ad designers. The little details on how this massive campaign became a staple of advertising are fantastic and make for a great read. I've gotten 3 copies now to give to graphic designer friends for gifts, they've all loved this book. It breaks down each design and the process of how that particular ad and concept came to be and how it relates to pop culture or the likes relative to that time period. Very inclusive.

Best coffee table book!

I love Absolut ad's and have always wanted to get one. They are expensive new , so I got an used copy from an amazon seller. It came quickly and I flipped through the book for about 20 min when it arrived 2 days later. I love all the ads and they are all so clever. I might not get some of the modern art ones, but I love the city ones in particular. Anyway, I got this book for my new house and new coffee table book, I think it is one of the best hardcover coffee table book (marketing story book) ever.

This is a terrific book, with information about how the wonderful Absolut vodka advertising campaign began. The real strength of the book is the collection of images. In some cases, looking at an entire campaign all together takes something away from the individual ads. This is not the case for these advertisements -- taken together, they are even cooler than they were in their original magazine contexts.
I just hope they will do a second volume when there are enough new ads to justify it.

A treasure to have in my collection

How revolutionary Rameau is. Surely he was writing music without any kind of agenda and so his ideas shine without adulteration. This edition of his complete works for keyboard is a joy to own. If I could only have one book of music this would be it. I say this as a pianist. This is important because if I were to play this music on a harpsichord it would be unsatisfying and almost incorrect. It is clearly edited with the piano and it's sustaining abilities in mind. Saint-Saens edited this music and has romantic influence in his editing. I don't think the purist would like this edition very much. The ornamentation is handled with much liberty but only to more suit the piano. If you're a musician who plays everything and thinks you have heard it all you're in for a surprise when you play this music. Just when you think Rameau has started to settle into a typical, lifeless, established baroque styling of a motif he comes out of nowhere with such shocking revelation that you aren't sure what century the music came out of exactly; questioning if you're actually playing a French baroque composer or Scarlatti or Beethoven or Bach or some neo-baroque composer. It is best to not assign any labels to this music and just play it. It will speak directly to your musicality and emotional sense and provide a great deal of joy and satisfaction. You will wonder why you haven't been playing this music sooner or why no one is talking about it. My recommendation is when you first get this music, play the Sarabande on pg. 66 first. Those arpeggios are to die for and it speaks for the taste of the entire book, not to mention those brave and lush harmonies. You will instantly be hooked. Claude Debussy said "Rameau is the greatest french composer ever to live" and I agree. Rameau's music is all gold, no filler. You need to own this book.

The music is beautiful. But the e-book presentation is so small I had to buy reading glasses.

Beautiful music and an historical feast for the ears. But the music appears to be presented as graphics images. One image corresponding with each page of sheet music. The problem is that it displays a full page in each e-reader page turn and these, then, are very SMALL compared to a normal sheet music presentation. For best results, I need to put the device into portrait disposition. But even then, it's quite a struggle to read many of the notes, especially the accidentals applied to appogiaturas. These are just about impossible to see. I've never used reading glasses before. But with the purchase of this book, I had to go out and buy a pair. Only with the reading glasses am I able to see that the accidental at top of 2nd page is in fact a 'natural' mark.

Rameau is the apex of french harpsichord music. He has an excellent mastery of chromatisism offset by a firm grasp of counterpoint.His music reflects a wide variety of styles,from a Couperinesque simplicity to an almost Bachian complexity.he often incorperates folk-like melodies,and elaborates them in a form of consumate mastery, bringing them up from their humble beginings and transforming them into works of consumate mastery. he is the fully worhty developement of three hundred years of french musical advancement,and certainly the successor to all the genius therin.
