With the release of Hooray for Diffendoofer Day! readers young and old are afforded a dazzling glimpse into the genius of Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. The book is based on 14 rough drawings and verses Geisel's secretary gave to the author's editor, Janet Schulman, after his death in 1991. In these scribbled sketches and scratched-out lines, we witness the Seussian process in building a story. When brainstorming the name of what resulted in the Diffendoofer School, he jots down several possible names--"William Wilkins Woofer Junior," "Woodrow Watkins Woofer," "Zoofendorf Elementary," "J. Ebeneezer Bomberg Jr."--all of a slightly different cadence and rhythm, which he tests like a composer writing a new concerto.

A small collection of Geisel's rough sketches would be plenty to thrill even the Grinchiest of readers, but there's much more to this marvelous book. Renowned children's poet Jack Prelutsky and award-winning illustrator Lane Smith were called to action by Schulman to pull these sketches into a complete story that would make Dr. Seuss fruffulous with glee. Prelutsky's delicious verse is uncannily Seussian, and it is inexplicably sensational when exploring the Diffendoofer School to discover good old Horton, a platter of green eggs and ham, and a few Whos from Who-ville scattered across the surreal and fascinating landscape of Smith's artwork. Lane and Prelutsky have gone above and beyond the call of duty, maintaining the characters and themes Geisel was just beginning to develop, but enhancing them with their own delightful stylistic stamps.

Dr. Seuss's name towers over the title on the jacket here, setting up readers to measure the book within?extrapolated from scanty manuscript and sketches?against the late artist's classic works. While such a comparison is almost certain to disappoint, it also distracts from an appreciation of the fruitful collaboration between the ebullient Prelutsky (The Dragons Are Singing Tonight) and the innovative Smith (The Stinky Cheese Man). Given some rough art and verses and a list of characters that were compiled by Seuss in 1988 or 1989, Prelutsky and Smith fashion a plot, message and visual milieu (see Children's Books, Feb. 9). Zesty rhymes, some of them Seuss's own, catalogue the eccentric staff of Diffendoofer School. Then trouble threatens: the students must take a standardized test to prove Diffendoofer's worth, lest the school be closed and everyone sent to Flobbertown ("And we shuddered at the name,/ For everyone in Flobbertown/ Does everything the same"). The valiant Miss Bonkers inspires her troops. Balancing a globe on one finger, she proudly declaims: "We've taught you that the earth is round,/ That red and white make pink,/ And something else that matters more-/ We've taught you how to think." Smith pastes in some Seuss sketches and invites Seuss characters and book jackets into his collages. The look, however, is very much Smith's; his style is so strong that it subsumes the Seussian elements in evidence (not just the collaged art but the typeface, the colored pages, the tilt of a given character's nose, etc.). Perhaps the richest reward?for adults if not for children?is the absorbing, meaty afterword by editor Janet Schulman, which allows readers a view of Seuss's draft and gives rare insight into the creative process. Kindergarten-Grade 6AThe original talents of Prelutsky and Smith bring an unfinished Dr. Seuss story to life-and what a story it is! The tale revolves around Diffendoofer School, a place where teachers make their own rules and students are taught to think. Their curriculum is an unusual one, covering such topics as "smelling," "laughing," and "how to tell a cactus from a cow," and the school is staffed by people who break all the stereotypes. When the principal informs the students that they must pass a rigorous test or risk being sent to dreary Flobbertown, the tension is palpable, but the inimitable Miss Bonkers is certain they'll pass. In fact, they receive the highest score, saving their school and their rather unorthodox education as well. The story fairly jumps off the page, as do the bright, exuberant collage and oil illustrations, which look like a combination of the familiar Seussian style and Smith's own. A sense of fun reigns supreme, and school comes off looking like a great place to be. Dr. Seuss's well-known books and characters (and even Ted Geisel himself) make cameo appearances throughout the work. The editor's notes on the process of creating the book include original sketches and ideas from Geisel's notebooks. This outstanding work is a must for all collections. Buy extra copies-and be sure to include one for the professional shelf as well. The cutest Dr. Seuss book ever

This is a really special book that was written by Dr. Seuss in his living years. I brought him great joy but also great sorrow because he never felt the book was what he wanted it to be and it ended up being an unpublished piece until after his passing. Upon his passing his secretary and a few friends helped get it published. The story is super cute, the ides is excellent and the fact that they were able to publish one of his works after is passing is great. I love it, I use it in circle time at my daughter's school and they love it.

Hooray for this book!

I bought this book for teacher appreciation week for two teachers and they both loved it. I admit I read them before I gifted them and It is an amazing story of teaching children to think differently and to be confident in what they learn, my favorite line is "we taught you how to think" Mrs. Bonkers is a wonderful teacher and all the characters have special talents. The teachers LOVED this book, I was there when one of the teachers read it to the class, a second grade class and the kids were laughing out loud and the fact that the book has the original sketches and background history in it really impressed the teacher, she was so excited. This book is great for teachers or parents, I admit after giving the teachers their book I had to buy my own copy :)

There are those who think financial reform has gone too fast - relaxations in foreign borrowing norms exposed firms to external shocks. Volatile capital flows impacted markets, although more liberalization of risk-sharing equity compared to debt flows, was effective in reducing domestic risk. But there are also those who think reform was too slow - choking financial development: many markets and instruments that could improve domestic financial intermediation and reduce risk were held back. Analysis suggests policy was able to find the correct timing, pace and combination of reforms and of caution, but improvement is always possible. Luck and inherent strengths of the economy helped absorb both policy mistakes and external shocks.

Excellent book

I first read this book when it came out in hardback and I was working after school in my local public library. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. I also read it a couple of times in the 80s, after I bought the paperback when they came out. Then I lost my copy.

Something made me look for another copy recently, and I find it's lost little with age.

The centerpiece of the plot - a Japanese holdout soldier named Kurusu - was probably inspired by a couple of discoveries of Japanese holdouts in the 70s. The most famous was a Lieutenant Onoda, found in the Philipines.

I'm not certain how to classify the book - historical fiction, action/adventure, etc - and it touches on several topics without going overboard, to its credit. These topics include the politics of a country dealing with having been a former colony, the former colonial settlers (in this case, American landowning farmers) who remained behind after independence, culture clashes (Japanese bushido juxtaposed with the tight American expatriate community and juxtaposed with the local Filipino culture, etc etc - you'll figure it out:)....

Its easy to view the book as a shallow 70s work (and a discerning reader will see some of that in the style; it has some elements of old chauvanism and "macho" mentality) but its main theme seems to be one of a search for belonging: outcast soldier Kurusu found it as a Japanese Kempentai warrant officer and maintained it while terroizing the locals for 30+ years as a holdout, American Mike Brandon's search for his place in life before he returned to his "home" (the Philipines), the American community's desperate charade of colonial power after the Philipines became independent, Capt Shimura's coming to terms with his wartime activities when he comes to search for Kurusu....etc etc. But none of this gets too deep - the action flows along and it all balances. There is also a minor romantic sub plot.

Great book in my little opinion. Try it !
(ps - a bit of knowledge of the Pacific theater of WW2 and Japanese culture helps the understanding. But its not required).

A Powerful Read

I read this story about 30 years ago, when I was a young soldier stationed in Germany. In the late 70's, there were stories in the news about finding Japanese soldiers on islands in the Pacific who did not know the war was over, and were eluding search teams who were sent to try to find them. They eventually brought them in, but it was a tricky proposition, due to the fanaticisim instilled in these soldiers.
The author takes it one step further...a fanatic, psycopathic Japanese leiutenant, sworn to never surrender his sword. The soldier also happens to be nearly eight feet tall. The natives of the island know him as "Amok". He has adapted to his enviornment and will not be taken alive!
Read this book...you will not be disappointed!!

You never know what you're going to get.

You never know what you're going to get in a "five cent book box". This is one of the best books I've ever read. Rarely reading a book more than once, I've read this at least five times. Like another "five cent" book "The Marshall" that I read once and have never been able to find and has haunted me ever since is ironically about the ghost of Wyatt Earp.Anyway Amok is among the "greats" truly.

Usually, accounts of Hitler start with WWI and his subsequent rise to power in Munich. And usually, histories of Vienna in the early part of this century focus on the Secession, on Freud, on Viktor Adler. But in her carefully argued and smartly written book, Hamann (The Reluctant Empress) creates a portrait that shows the evolution of a far different city, one that for five years, between 1908 and 1913, shaped one young provincial. This is a Vienna of poor laborers who live in men's hostels and are the willing fodder of Social Democrats and Pan-Germans alike. Waves of immigrants (among them Jews fleeing Russian pogroms) and the introduction of equal suffrage in 1906 gave rise to a virulent crop of chauvinistic German politicians and theoreticians who shaped Hitler's worldview, from his racism to his use of "Fuhrer" and "Heil," both adopted from Pan-German activist Georg Schonerer. Unlike many biographers, Hamann finds the roots of Hitler's anti-Semitism here, rather than in run-ins with Jewish professors at the Academy of Visual Arts (there were none), a Jewish grandfather (the evidence, she convincingly argues, is lacking) or a syphilitic Jewish prostitute (Hitler was inordinately afraid of both infection and women). Hamann also traces other crucial aspects of Hitler's development to his time in Vienna: his fascination with the mechanics of theater and the political symbolism of architecture, and his hatred of parliamentarianism. A Valuable Study

I thought I knew a lot about Adolf Hitler's life, even his youth, until I stumbled upon this book. Hitler's Vienna provides a fascinating glimpse into the social, economic, and political milieu in which young Hitler found himself immersed when he came from the provinces to the capital of the crumbling Austro-Hungarian empire in order to pursue his dream of a career in art or architecture.
The book is really less about Hitler himself than about the forces which helped to shape his weltanschauung. Though he reportedly not an anti-Semite as a youth, it was in Vienna that Hitler learned the language of anti-semitism and nationalism.
As I engrossed myself in the book, my thoughts often wandered to comparing the identity politics and quota demands of Austro-Hungarian politicians with the increasing ethnic balkanization here in the United States and wondered whether such a man as Hitler could not one day spring from our political landscape.
One of the chief things I learned is that political and ethnic anti-Semitism was already a very potent force among both the more radical German-nationalist followers of Georg Schoenerer as well as among the more mainstream supporters of the enormously popular mayor of Vienna, Karl Lueger. There was also a large groundswell of anti-Czech sentiment due to a heavy flow of Czechs into Vienna and to the mistreatment by Czechs of Germans in Sudetenland, a situation that Hitler was later to temporarily rectify.
The most surprising fact about Hitler brought to light is that he had many Jewish friends during his Vienna days. And I had to laugh at the part where he was described by a former fellow boarder at the men's hostel as having arrived wearing shoulder-length hair and wearing nothing but a coat because he didn't have a shirt.
Though the book adds much to what we knew of Hitler, it comes no closer than any other of really getting inside his head to explain his true motivations. After all, hundreds of thousands of Europeans hated Jews and lived through the same hardships that young Hitler did, but only Hitler took that extra step and made the end of Jewry his life's work. Nevertheless, this book is a very valuable study and is an easy and fascinating read that comes highly recommended to all those who yearn to know more about the life and times of Adolf Hitler.

The key to Mein Kampf

Brigitte Hamann has done a remarkable thing with this book. By examining Vienna during Hitler's formative years, she has unlocked a lot of mystery surrounding the great man himself. While it is true that she uncovered discrepancies in Hitler's description of those years in Mein Kampf, her real contribution is in helping the reader to understand what Hitler was talking about, and why he said the things he said.
Particularly useful is Hamann's analysis of the prominent politicians of the day. She first described these leaders and their political ups and downs. Then, with the testimony of the witnesses who knew Hitler during those years, she deftly draws a picture of the formative influences that helped shape the mature dictator. Hitler was obsessed with politics and he learned what worked and what did not work during those early years in Vienna. Many of his later policies first saw the light of day in the Vienna of his youth. There is a chilling passage about the problem of gypsy pickpockets expected for the 60 Anniversary Parade in honor of Emperor Franz Joseph, in 1908. One solution, seriously presented in Parliament at the time, was to tattoo a number on the forearm of every gypsy.
Hamann also provides an in-depth analysis of the Austro-Hungarian attempt at a multi-ethnic parliamentarism, the chaos and the inefficiency that it brought, and the consequent neglect for the common people. The Pan-German movement, which clearly influenced the young Hitler is clearly explained in considerable detail. At times while reading this book, I had to pause and remind myself that the period under review presaged the rise of Adolf Hitler to power by some 20 years!
Out of the murk emerges Hitler as a young man obsessed by politics, hot tempered, forceful in argument, with poor work habits, odd hours, and a penchant for talk. Hamann's decision to look at the politics that helped him to formulate his world view is brilliant history. This fascinating book is very worthy of your attention.

Viennese Whirl

Understandably, Brigitte Hamann likes Vienna more than Hitler. She shows us around the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire with great authority and is a Sherlock Holmes for tracking down remnants of Hitler's stay there prior to his move to Munich.

Hitler's Vienna starts with a long chapter on Hitler's background in provincial Linz. Moving to Vienna, Hamann describes the galleries and operas he attended, the newspapers he probably read and the multilingual parliamentary debates that infuriated him. She tells the stories of the politicians Georg Sch�nerer, leader of the minority Pan-German party and Christian Socialist Karl Lueger who Hitler sought to emulate. She tells us of his life in the rented rooms and hostels where he stayed. She tells us about the ambitions of the trade unionists and lives of the Czech and Jewish communities. This colours in the sketches Hitler gave in Mein Kampf and his friend August Kubicek in The Young Hitler I Knew, from which she draws.

She also speculates on what he read, including probably Houston Stewart Chamberlain and Gustav Le Bon's The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind and perhaps Nietzsche. The replacement of physical by social anthropology in our culture has probably made the influence of Chamberlain's Foundations of the Nineteenth Century hard for us to grasp. My feeling is that she thus underestimates the influence of Vienna on Hitler's mind. Quibbles and second-guessing apart though, this is an exhaustive, well-written and absorbing book on its subject.

Important Historical Account - Classic

Higgitt's book is an account of the ship HMS Ardent during the Falkland's War. He draws heavily on primary sources - letters, diaries and interviews carried out by himself. He shows with great clarity and sensitivity the experience of the young sailors who were given insufficient resources to fight and defend their ship. It is a book about heroes, but is without hype. It is a book that shows Whitehall what they demand of boys scarcely out of school, and damns them for their indifference. I am sure that this work will be a standard text for all who are interested in the Falklands War and how it was fought, the author should be commended for preserving this story.

Good book for those naval history fans and good tribute to those who lost their life in the war

This is a book about the F-184 fight in the Malvinas \ Faklands war. The book has a lot of facts and information but also readable, sometimes more than what I expected.
It shows not only the most critical moments in the last great Air - Naval war of the century, it also shows the individual lifes of those brave men on Ardent and also of the other side, because they not only shows the crew fighting for their lives and ship, it shows some of the pilots life too.
I saw a few differences of the Argentina Air force and navy air force version of the attacks, just the Pablo Carballo bombs that are mentioned as not hitting the ship, in the Argentine version they hit but do not explode, and that has occurred many times.
I would say its very accurate taking in mind there were several waves of Jet attacks this day.
I think the book is a good tribute to the ship and all lives lost in both sides on those actions, the book will really help the world not to forget that 21 of may and HMS Ardent. If you like naval history this is a recommended book.

A good book

This book is a good description of the lead up to, and the sinking of Royal Navy Frigate HMS Ardent in the Falklands War. It also gives a very good description of the effects on the families and survivors. The main point to come out of this book in my opinion is how vulnerable Ardent was to air attack, in close to land due to her poor quality radar systems and inadequate air defences and the fact that she was basically a decoy for the Argintinian jets. I agree that the battle scenes became a bit disjointed and a bit repetitive but that did not detract from the book in my opinion.

This book is a must read for ex naval personnel and all people interested in military history. A good effort.
