GOOD CLINICAL BOOK.

I first read this gem of a book in medical school where it was essential reading in the clinical years. I loved it instantaneously then and have continued to enjoy it ever since. The book is not very large and cumbersome to read and provides an excellent insight into the clinical medicine.

Literary Storytelling at its best

Neil Gaiman's artistic exploration of sin and redemption in Sandman: Season of Mists is a wonderful example of the literary excellence that can be achieved with a graphic novel format. Gaiman blends traditional literary techniques, surreal art, and evocative storytelling in order to create a unique work of literature.
Sandman is a seventy-five issue comic book series which follows Morpheus, a divine being known also as Sandman, as he explores the dreams of humanity and deals with other divine creatures in order to better understand mankind. Season of Mists, the third story arc in the series, begins with the Sandman, Lord of Dreams, journeying into Hell in order to forgive a woman he condemned nearly ten thousand years ago. Things quickly become complicated, however, when Lucifer decides to resign as king of Hell, and leaves the Sandman with the key to his kingdom. As the story progresses, the Sandman finds himself debating what to do with an empty Hell, as well as contemplating what it would mean to forgive the woman he condemned.
Gaiman writes the above story in a poetic narrative that incorporates a variety of literary techniques. The divine beings the Sandman encounters speak in an almost musical pattern that uses a lot of alliteration, and one scene, in which the Sandman speaks to a group of historical writers, is even written completely in iambic pentameter. The style works extremely well, since it also serves as an allusion to the poetic works of Shakespeare (who even makes a brief appearance in the tale), Dante's Divine Comedy, and John Milton's poem Paradise Lost, all of which are classic literary works that explore similar themes of sin and redemption.
The majority of Gaiman's literary techniques, however, are incorporated into the story through the art. Most of the figurative language, such as metaphors, allusions, and imagery are made literal by the visible depictions of characters and locations. In one scene, all the divine beings the Sandman encounters are each drawn according to the art styles of the cultures from which they originate. In another scene, we see the horrors occurring at a boarding school for troubled boys. Flip back a few pages to the depiction of Hell, and the similarities between the two locations become clear. Most effective, however, is the scene in which Lucifer congratulates God on the beauty of a sunset. The painting which accompanies the statement conveys that beauty far more effectively than words ever could.
Neil Gaiman's Sandman: Season of Mists is a fantastical and intelligent tale that belongs in any literary collection.

The best of the series...and that's saying a lot

The fourth book in The Sandman Chronicles, Season of Mists picks up where the second volume, The Doll's House left off, continuing the story of Dream and his siblings. Unlike the previous books, Season of Mists focuses mostly on immortals (or those close to it) rather than mortals. Only one of the chapters of the book even took place on earth, and that was dealing with the dead, not the living.

Because of this slightly different format, Season of Mists introduced a lot of rather colorful characters. Some were the relatively familiar faces of Norse, Egyptian, and Eastern gods, angels, and demons, while others were new characters, delightful and colorful in their own way. I particularly liked the contrast of Order and Chaos and, of course, the faeries, but that was a given to anyone who knows me at all.

I promise, though, I won't dwell on them here. I love Nuala, but in Season of Mists she really plays a very small roll.

The central plot of Season of Mists is the abandonment of Hell. Lucifer closes it, turning out all the souls, and then gives the key to Dream to do with as he will. This, naturally proves far more complicated than it originally seems.

Most of the story is concerned with the direct repercussions of this, particularly among the (relatively) immortal creatures of mythology. The result was one of the most fun chapters I've read in a long time-the chapter where they all come and present their cases to Dream, trying to win Hell for themselves. The interactions were entertaining, and the different ways that they tried to persuade Dream to give them the key to Hell, along with their reasons for wanting it and plans for it, were as varied and entertaining as they are.

I have to admit, that I was a little disappointed with the ultimate decision, and I wish that I could have known who Dream would have chosen if no one had interceded, but I do admit that the decision that was reached was the only one that could be reached. It did, however, raise an interesting point when Hell was given to its new owners and re-populated. I'm not sure that I agree that it's worse to be tortured to be redeemed and made a better person than it is to be tortured for no reason, but I can see how, with eternal torment, this might be the case. It is, after all, easier to bear unpleasant things if you can be righteously angry about them.

Woven in with the main story of the "battle" for Hell, was a secondary plot line. It was, for a while, seemingly forgotten once the key to Hell was handed over to Dream, but Gaiman did not forget about it, and the conclusion to that was even more satisfying, in my opinion, than the conclusion to the main story. I was glad that Nada was not forgotten in all the distractions.

I know that there is more to Season of Mists than I've gotten out of it, but I've only read it once and, like the other books in The Sandman, it is one that must be read multiple times in order to be fully appreciated. It is also a book I hope to return to sometime in the future.

Amazing Modern Mythology

Upon my first reading of this story of The Sandman series, i was struck by how simply and profoundly Gaiman interwove so many mythologies, all the while writing the most original modern myth of our time -- dare i say _all_ time -- something that a dust cover blurb would say "if William Blake and Mark Twain colaborated on the story of what Lucifer is doing these days..." Everything from the Angels, Duma and Remiel (quite wonderful choices -- check out G. Davidson's "Dictionary of Angels" for how accurate!), to the enraged expelled demons, Azazel and company, and the self-admitted profound absence of the Greek dieties. With each successive reading, i found these threads are strung together into an amazing story of what might happen should the Ruler of Hell abdicate. Told through the perspective (and responsibility) of the Prince of Stories, the Lord Shaper Morpheus himself. i found this to be a as great a starting point as any for the series, if for no other reason, because of the wondrous introduction of Dream and his family, The Endless. The resolution of plot and every subplot, is quite tasty, and having Lucifer acknowledge the beauty of sunsets that The Creator (and his nemesis) provides daily, gives me chills just to think of it. And the bookended cliche phrases of "Once Upon A Time" and "Happily Ever After. In Hell." Give this esoteric mythos tale the finishing air of mundanity (?) that place it within the realm of each and every one of us. Aside from being my own personal favorite longer story within the series, it is in my opinion, the best. ["The Kindly Ones" would be a close second.]

A thoroughly supported and well-written read. My only gripe is the lack of citations, which would have made it easier to check up on and learn more about the multitude of examples the author provides as evidence for his arguments.

A Rx for more division

Bartz does a reasonably good job of debunking religious belief systems in a similar manner to outspoken atheists such as Harris, Dawkins and Hitchins, but unfortunately they write for those of us who are aethiests. He is preaching to the choir (I know, a poor choice of words). The sad fact is that the people who really need to read this book won't read it. The tone of his writing is too confrontational and will only create more division between camps.

Very good overview of corrosion

This was not a required book for my first level graduate school course, but it was recommended and I am glad that I purchased it. It was a very helpful supplement to the lecture notes. I would recommend this book for a great overview of corrosion with details on specific metals and alloys, but for those who want a highly technical, in-depth look into corrosion other titles might be more comprehensive.

Poignant memories and storied snapshots

Now that I've arrived at an older age, I've been reading biographies, auto-biographies, and memoir reflections of the times I grew up in (basically the fifties & sixties). Not my usual material. It's just a treat to have little personal moments pop up in other folk's storytelling. Thus, though the places may differ, the memories surely suffice.

Immediately upon finishing Michael MacDonald's tremendous book, Easter Rising: A Memoir of Roots and Rebellion, following his life and escape from South Boston, I jumped into this twin book by Teri Borseti. Filled with vignettes and snapshots of life with a struggling single-mom family in another very poor section of Boston, I was moved by her sensibilities and compelling recollections. Indeed, life in that simple era was completely different from today's techno-world and she never fails to connect the past with the present.

Each chapter heading [i.e. - "Illness", "Braces", "Bugs", "Rats', "Summer in the Projects", "Nana", "Ma"] sets up and brings out humorous details and colorful adolescent tales. The author has been a freelance writer for many magazines in Boston, and her writing style is quick and breezy. The mere mention of several local iconic items [Bailey's sundaes, Zarex, Revere Beach, The Enchanted Village] brought a sweet shiver. Other references are infused with a sadness of lost family & friends.

The arc of her young life is a moving and powerful tribute to the tenacity of childhood to absorb and grow beyond one's actual surroundings. I was deeply touched by this evocative memory theatre.

I did enjoy the walk down memory lane

A story from the perspective of an impressionable child.The authors memory held on to mostly negative memories of parochial school. I attended the same school during the same time period and never remember the nuns being so cruel A little more research would have helped with proper spelling of Italian words.

My years on Maverick street.

I had lived in those projects & on Maverick street. However it was at an earlier time from 1942 - 1954.
It brought back some real fond memories of my boyhood there. You can read just how much living in
the projects had changed between the time that i lived there & the time period that i was there.
Great story.

Highly recommended for ESL teachers and SOME students

As an adult ESL teacher, I found this book a delightful and amusing take on ESL grammar and vocabulary. It's true, some of the illustrations are "pornographic," as another reviewer put it, and there's some dark humor in the book, so some of it would not be appropriate for K-12 students or more conservative adult students. But no intelligent teacher would just give a book like this to students. Rather, the best approach, I think, is to select some of the very funny examples and illustrations to show to students; they will be more memorable than the run-of-the-mill textbook examples and therefore more helpful in learning the language. As for the reviewer who claimed that there are grammatical errors, I'd like to know what he or she is talking about. As far as I can tell, the author is accurate and admirably clear in her explanations of the finer points of English.

The Best Basic Reference for Weavers

I had a copy of this book many years ago, when I first started weaving, but it went missing. Since I couldn't find the name of it, and people kept suggesting another title (which can't hold a candle to it), I was unable to replace it. Finally, I found a reference to it online, on a weaver's forum, and ordered another copy. It's much easier to use this than to have to look up basic measurements, and other handy information in weaving textbooks, and I'm awfully glad to have this at my fingertips again!

Build Yourself A Winter Wonderfarm

Got a little land? Love a lot of vegetables? Then build yourself a Winter Wonderfarm. You may not be able to enjoy fresh garden tomatoes in the dead of winter, but there are more than 30 green and root vegetables that you can enjoy. From carrots to onions, celery to kohlrabi, and almost every vegetable in between, your Winter Wonderfarm will become the envy of your neighborhood. Perhaps that's where the expression "green with envy" came from . . . a better, greener farm.

The three components to a successful winter harvest, according to Mr. Coleman are:

1) Cold-hardy vegetables
2) Succession planting
3) Protected cultivation

As it turns out, if we can protect our vegetables from the winter winds, we can grow many vegetables successfully, even in the snow. Some vegetables, such as spinach, lettuce and matte, are actually even sweeter and more tender in cooler temperatures. Think you surely have to provide supplementary lighting? Nope . . . not needed when grown in one of Mr. Coleman's "cold houses". He uses these cold houses even in the Maine winters of Zone 5.

You'll also learn about vertical production of tomatoes and how to create your own cold frame with quick hoops made of electrical conduit and 10-foot-wide spun-bonded row cover held down by sandbags. These hoops can cover the same area as a 22 by 48 foot greenhouse at 5% of the cost. Speaking of cost, a recent article in the AARP Magazine indicated that we can save $1,000.00 a year growing our own vegetables in a small garden. Now add your winter crop savings, and imagine what you'd save. Your Winter Wonderfarm will yield delicious, organic vegetables, improving your diet and fattening your wallet. Good reading, not quite what I was looking for

I agree with jyoung's review that there are great stories and history lessons in the book of how winter gardening works and how it worked for the French & British in the 1800's. The whole last 1/3rd of the book is about marketing and packaging produce for a business, so not very applicable for me as a home gardener. I also find his stories and techinques difficult to apply on a smaller scale for my home garden. I feel the book lacks actual how-to information, it is just some stories on what he has tried over the years and what he grows to sell to his customer base. Living at almost 11,000 feet in Colorado, I was really hoping for some good information on winter gardening since we have around 7-8 months of snow/year including receiving snow sometimes around (or after) July 4th. Though the book was an interesting read and a good history lesson, it was not quite the technical how-to guide I was looking for.

Winter Harvest Handbook

Once again Elliot Coleman has provided us with a wealth of knowledge when it comes to both home and commercial gardening. In these times of change, it is reassuring to know that there are those who are more than willing to share what they have learned. We have been using some of his techniques here in New Brunswick, Canada with great success. We are currently eating spinach in April and May that we planted last fall in our cold frame. If a crop can survive one of our winters, they should survive elsewhere. If you want to put in a garden, this is a must book to own.

Worth it

This short booklet is worth the effort to learn about Vegan Nutrition and the necessity for a good source of B-Complex and either substitution, if yer into that sort of thing, and how to eat as a Vegan to provide your body sufficient nutrition exceeding daily recommended values.

A much-needed learned physician's view of vegan eating

I find this book to be such a refreshing break from the typical diet drivel put out by "big-name" physicians like Atkins. Dr. Klaper knows his nutrition, knows his medicine, and even knows his foods (the recipes are excellent.) With his kind heart, he shares the best way to save yours.

This book changed my life, for real

Dr. Michael Klaper's book "Vegan Nutritrion: Pure and Simple" changed my meat-eating-meat-loving life, pure and simple. I've been an omnivore all my life (still am) and love the taste of meat. I do have qualms about the moral issues of meat-eating, but never cared enough to limit the sweet pleasure of a great steak, fish, shellfish, lamb, chicken, or dairy product. I now eat these delicacies only in small quantities due to the influence of Dr. Michael Klaper.

Dr. Klaper's "Vegan Nutritrion: Pure and Simple" approaches vegan nutrition as just that - nutrition. It's the only book that has influenced me, and only because of its nutritional approach. Dr. Klaper says the human body has no nutritional requirement for animal products, and makes a fact-based, well-researched case supporting his claim. He outlines how the human body is not built to process animal products, and why the natural building blocks of animal products are harmful to the human body.

Due to Dr. Klaper, I lost my taste for all that delicious meat, shellfish, and dairy. I still eat it once in a while, but I consider it a treat vs. every-day basic. As a result, my body is lighter, I have more energy, my mind is clearer, and my life expectancy is longer. Thank you Dr. Klaper!!

I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about human nutrition!
