Bruce Ecker and Laurel Hulley are the originators of Coherence Therapy and coauthors of Depth Oriented Brief Therapy: How To Be Brief When You Were Trained To Be Deep – and Vice Versa, the Coherence Therapy Practice Manual�and Training Guide, and the Manual of Juxtaposition Experiences: How to Create Transformational Change Using Disconfirming Knowledge in Coherence Therapy. Ecker is�codirector of the Coherence Psychology Institute, has taught for many years in graduate programs, and has been in private practice near San Francisco since 1986. Hulley is director of education and paradigm development of the Coherence Psychology Institute and co-founder of the Julia Morgan Middle School for Girls in Oakland, California.

Robin Ticic is director of training and development of the Coherence Psychology Institute and is in private practice near Cologne, Germany, specializing in trauma therapy and clinical supervision of trauma therapists. The Science of Emotional Change

I've purchased 100s of books from Amazon.com over the years and while I frequently read the customer reviews prior to a purchase decision, I've never before had the inclination or urge to write a review myself. This is my first.

As a little background and context, in my 2nd stage in life, I made a career change and am currently a registered Marriage and Family Therapist Intern nearing completion of my experiential hours required to take the licensing exams. A Masters Degree and 3000+ hours of experience does not qualify me as an expert in psychotherapy though it does give me a lot of face time with people suffering from mild to severe psychological issues. The training and supervision process has also shown me that almost all therapists struggle with how best to help our clients and what specific tools, theoretical modalities or other techniques to use to ease this suffering. Along the way, therapists, including myself, adopt theories that fit with our own philosophical beliefs and life experiences. Personally, I've found myself relating best to the 3rd Wave Cognitive/Behavioral Therapies (ACT, DBT, etc.) though Interpersonal Neurobiology (INPB) and attachment theory have heavily informed the therapeutic path I currently follow. Brief Therapies haven't been my focus, but I've occasionally come across things that feel relevant and helpful.

A few years back, I came across Ecker and Hulley's book, Depth Oriented Brief Psychotherapy, and it fascinated and moved me to consider the most logical notion that psychological "symptoms" are functional. Other paths caught my attention, but I've occasionally come back to this book and was very interested when I saw that Ecker, Hulley, (and Ticic) had a new book coming out. I immediately pre-ordered it. When it arrived last week, I picked it up, started reading it, and had finished it within a few days. Very few psychological theory books get me past a few chapters, but I read "Unlocking the Emotional Brain" as if it were a favorite author's novel that could not be put down.

I can't speak to the science behind "memory reconsolidation," but having uttered the phrase that "we don't get an eraser for our past" more than a few times, I was more than a little excited to read that it might actually be possible to erase and re-write implicit learnings/memory from our past. Attachment related issues are so common in this field, yet most methods of dealing with them are aimed at the therapist/client having an almost "reparenting" experience to provide the secure attachment the client didn't get early in life. "Unlocking the Emotional Brain" provides a very specific, detailed methodology for actually elimiminating those implicit, generally unconscious learnings we pick up from our life experiences from an early age and onward, thus reducing the need for the symptoms that support those learnings. I assumed the book would be a Coherence Therapy manual (and it is to a certain extent), but I was gratified to see it written as a trans-theoretical model of how psychological change actually happens and how a variety of types of therapy achieve this change. I can think of no other book in my library of psychology books that is more clear on the why, what and how of working with clients. I've already started using this new knowledge with clients and it's already produced results where there was stuckness prior.

I believe this book should be read by all levels of therapists, but especially students, interns, and those still struggling to find their theoretical home base from which to ground their therapeutic work... Cannot recommend highly enough.

Transforming Psychotherapy

Many books about psychotherapy are touted as "must reads", but this one is deservedly so for several reasons. First and foremost, Ecker, Ticic and Hulley draw a direct link between the neuroscience of memory reconsolidation-- which refers to research demonstrating that emotional memories or "limbic learnings" can, under certain precisely delineated conditions, be "erased" or updated-- and transformation in psychotherapy. While much brain research offers us interesting re-framings or metaphors for what happens in psychotherapy, few findings guide the actual practice of psychotherapy. Thanks to these authors, we now have relatively recent neuroscientific research (previously unknown to most clinicians) that actually points the way toward how psychotherapy, at its best, facilitates profound, "second order" change. That is, change that re-organizes a person's implicit "models" of self, other and relationship that lie at the heart (or "roots") of a whole host of problems which commonly present themselves to psychotherapists. Linking the brain with psychotherapy was a dream of Freud's over 100 years ago; this dream may be close to being realized in this book, a stunning feat unto itself.

As if that wasn't enough, Ecker et al offer several other wonderful contributions to the literature. These include: 1) Outlining the essential features of "therapeutic reconsolidation", that is the direct application of the "memory reconsolidation" research to profound psychotherapeutic change; 2) Demonstrating how therapeutic reconsolidation occurs in several transformative psychotherapies, not only in Coherence Therapy (CT), the constructivist-experiential approach developed by Ecker and Hulley, but also AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), EFT (Emotion-Focused Therapy) and Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB). When so many therapy approaches tout their "brand's" superiority, it is remarkable that these authors are truly committed to integration, that is to discovering what makes deep change possible across distinct schools of therapy; 3) Reviewing the literature on attachment as applies to psychotherapy, and demonstrating how "reparative attachment" (i.e. repairing attachment wounds within the therapy relationship) is one but not the sole means by which attachment injuries can be transformed; and 4) Providing four clinical cases from other practitioners of Coherence Therapy (in addition to several other vignettes interspersed throughout the earlier discussion of clinical theory), rendered in some depth so that readers can further witness the therapeutic reconsolidation process from the perspective of Coherence Therapy.

The authors and their colleagues achieve all of this, using language that is clear, precise to the point of elegant, jargon-free, compelling and at times even inspiring. These authors seek to excite the reader, as well as bring together the usually separate fields of neuroscience and psychotherapy. For this reader, they succeed in ways few books can compare. If Ecker, Ticic and Hulley's new offering doesn't become a groundbreaking classic, it ought to! But don't take my word for it: discover for yourself the many gems that lay within.

Consistent recovery...

Putting the final touches on over a quarter century of clinical practice backed up by rigorous thinking, Bruce Ecker, Robin Ticic and Laurel Hulley have written a break thru book that sets itself apart from other psychology books in 2 significant ways,
1. A new way of defining recovery,
2. An explanation of why other systems of therapy occasionally work.

Methodology:
Perhaps most important, this book is based on the analysis of actual clinical cases. No hypothetical theories explaining how our behaviors are the result of imaginary forces like Id, Ego, Superego, Parent, Adult, Child etc. This book presents real Individuals recovering from a wide variety of psychological sufferings.

Recovery:
'Recovery' is defined with 2 very different meanings.
First, it's permanent, not the typical works for a while, then we return back to our original problems as is true of counteractive change philosophies as happen so frequently in both clinical practice and certainly in our prison systems.

Second, it's totally predictable!
If you follow the 7 Simple steps presented, the sequence of experiences the brain requires to heal, you will create transformational change in every case, no hits or misses.

Other approaches:
This book explains how & when other systems work. EMDR, AEDP, EFT, IPNB are all given significant space with clear cases and comparisons. Chapter 5 puts the currently over-popular Attachment theory into a more reasonable perspective.

Style:
This most readable book is supplemented by downloadable sections like the Glossary, an excellent e-experience. It's so nice to download & print out the Glossary of Terms and have it next to you while reading the book...

While tying the theory to recent neurological research, gives it additional scientific validity, if you don't like terms like limbic, pre-frontal, sub-cortical and synapses don't worry they're all crammed into Chapter 2, which you can skip with no loss of overall meaning...

Audience:
While the book's style is clearly focused towards psychotherapists, many others may also benefit from such a clear presentation of the common sense data of our daily lives...

This book, based on extensive field research, examines the Indian state’s response to the multiple insurgencies that have occurred since independence in 1947.

In reacting to these various insurgencies, the Indian state has employed a combined approach of force, dialogue, accommodation of ethnic and minority aspirations and, overtime, the state has established a tradition of negotiation with armed ethnic groups in order to bolster its legitimacy based on an accommodative posture. While these efforts have succeeded in resolving the Mizo insurgency, it has only incited levels of violence with regard to others. Within this backdrop of ongoing Indian counter-insurgency, this study provides a set of conditions responsible for the groundswell of insurgencies in India, and some recommendations to better formulate India’s national security policy with regard to its counter-insurgency responses.

The study focuses on the national institutions responsible for formulating India’s national security policy dealing with counter-insurgency – such as the Prime Minister’s Office, the Cabinet Committee on Security, the National Security Council, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Indian military apparatus. Furthermore, it studies how national interests and values influence the formulation of this policy; and the overall success and/or failure of the policy to deal with armed insurgent movements. Notably, the study traces the ideational influence of Kautilya and Gandhi in India’s overall response to insurgencies. Multiple cases of armed ethnic insurgencies in Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland in the Northeast of India and the ideologically oriented Maoist or Naxalite insurgency affecting the heartland of India are analysed in-depth to evaluate the Indian counter-insurgency experience.

About the Author
A 1976 distinguished graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, ADM. JAMES STAVRIDIS spent over thirty-five years on active service in the U.S. Navy. He commanded destroyers and a carrier strike group in combat, and served for seven years as a four-star admiral, culminating with four years as the sixteenth Supreme Allied Commander at NATO. He holds a PhD in international relations, and is currently Dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. Admiral Stavridis has written six books and hundreds of articles on global security issues and leadership.

A former lieutenant commander in the Navy Reserve with periods of active duty, R. MANNING ANCELL has worked in media for decades. The author of more than 200 articles in magazines, newspapers and journals, he has authored or co-authored six books, including Four-Star Leadership for Leaders and Who Will Lead? Senior Leadership in the United States Army. He lives in Norfolk, Virginia, with his wife.

What's In Your Library? Here Are Some Great Recommendations.

Some years ago I met Admiral Jim Stavridis. The conversation, while short, turned to books. If I recall, it was in Stuttgart, Germany, sometime around 2010 or 2011. Because he was the Supreme Allied Commander Europe and the U.S. European Commander (EUCOM), he had to divide his time between two locations: his NATO headquarters located near Mons, Belgium and his EUCOM headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany. At the time, I worked in the intelligence directorate at EUCOM when we heard he was coming by to meet the staff.

It was a gray, overcast afternoon when he arrived. He promptly made his way down a long line of officers and enlisted, each of them posed to shake his hand and say a few words. I had only a few seconds to make a connection—to say something interesting or ask him a question. But this I knew: I loved books; he loved books; and while standing there, I thought of something he wrote that might prove that I, like him, believed that books are essential to our profession, if not our lives.

Months prior, he had written one of his regular blog posts. In it, he said that his wife noticed that his love of books and his growing library had evolved into a “gentle madness.” That phrase—a “gentle madness”—refers to a wonderful book by author Nicholas Basbanes. Basbanes’ book—A Gentle Madness: Bibliophiles, Bibliomanes, and the Eternal Passion for Books — is a long, discursive work: one part discussion of historic book culture in America and Britain, the other full of profiles of quirky and dedicated book lovers and collectors.

When the admiral finally reached me, I mentioned the blog post and the book. His eyes lit up and he said something about few people knowing the reference. He then told me he owned 4,000 books. Surprised, I said something about wanting a library that large. He then simply said, “You’ll get there.” The conviction in his voice floored me. I believed him. And he was right. I’m getting there (the featured image of this post is a picture of my library; today I have around 2,000 titles, give or take).

Fast forward a few years and, no surprise, the admiral’s library has grown. Stavridis, in the introduction to the entertaining The Leader’s Bookshelf, says that he has in his “house today… more than four thousand books.” His wife, Laura, “has spent far too much of her life packing and unpacking them in postings all around the world.”

Stavridis and his co-author, R. Manning Ancell, have written a book that is somewhat similar to Richard Puryear’s fine book—now unfortunately out of print—American Admiralship: The Moral Imperatives of Command. Puryear interviewed 150 four star admirals on a variety of topics. One of those topics was the importance of reading. And like Puryear, Stavridis and Ancell take a similar path. In The Leader’s Bookshelf, they interviewed 200 four-star generals and flag officers, and from those discussions, they determined the 50 books that “stood out most…with top military readers.”

Using no particular scientific method, they rank ordered the books in descending order by the number of mentions. Thus, the first book on the list, Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels (1974), was mentioned most often. While the last on the list, How: Why HOW We Anything Means Everything by Dov Seidman, was mentioned least frequently.

For each title, there is a short essay by a senior officer as to why they choose the book, followed by a quote from the book, a biography of the author, then a summary of the book by either Stavridis or Ancell, concluding with a few sentences about why the book is important for leaders today.

For folks that regularly follow the reading lists that are published by the Chief of Naval Operations or the other services, there are, unfortunately, few surprises. The regularly cited titles appear: Anton Myer’s Once an Eagle, Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, Clausewitz’s On War, John Keegan’s The Face of Battle, E.B. Potter’s Nimitz, and the always popular Steven Pressfield with his Gates of Fire. They all made the cut.

While there is nothing wrong with the oldies but goodies, it was refreshing to see some unusual—or rather, some outliers—find a place in the top 50. Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s court makes a showing as does Norman Mclean’s A River Runs Through It. In fact, General Stan McChrystal is the senior officer that recommended Twain’s satirical novel about a man from the 19th century, Hank Morgan, traveling back in time to King Arthur’s court.

The Leader’s Bookshelf, I confess, would be ho-hum if not for the additional essays that Stavridis and Ancell add to the book. It is these essays on publishing, reading lists, and building a personal library, that raise this book from mediocrity to must have. And here, Robert Ancell pulls his weight, adding a nice cherry on top with an interview with General Mattis.

Mattis beats Stavridis in the book department. With some 7,000 titles on his shelves, he probably is the best read military leader—retired or active—out there. In the interview, Mattis mentions books that apply to each level of war. Of note, he recommends Lucas Phillips’ book The Greatest Raid of All. A book about a British raid that shattered the Nazi’s dry docks at Saint-Nazaire, France during World War II, preventing the Germans from using the docks for large battleships for the duration of the war. The raid resulted in no less than five Victoria Crosses. I had never heard of neither the book nor the raid. It is these little-known reading recommendations that make books like this exciting. You simply do not know what you might find.

Ironically, the only criticism—or rather, observation—I have about the book is that senior officers still do not carve out enough time to read. And this in a book in which one of the early essays is about “Making Time for Reading.”

In one essay, a senior officer admits that while working in the Joint Staff that he only read one book in a year. One book! While another, in her recommendation, wrote only two sentences to praise the work—and even then those two sentences were footnoted. Sigh.

Nonetheless, The Leader’s Bookshelf will appeal to all types: The newbie looking for a good book to read and the bibliomaniac who may have read all 49 on the list and owns each first edition, but unaware, or didn’t realize there was just one more interesting title out there.

A New Leadership Perspective

I cannot recommend this book enough.

Amazon users are no doubt aware of the proliferation of books about leadership. What makes the Leader’s Bookshelf different is it provides a rich how-to guide for using books to your advantage and developing nuanced leadership skills.

On its surface, the Leader’s Bookshelf appears just to be a book about great books. But it is far more than just a mere listicle in hard binding. Each book overview includes quotes from one of its four-star recommenders, providing a window into their thought processes, and a brief synopsis of the book’s main lessons for the time-starved.

Many reviewers, and even the book’s authors, remark on the inclusion of books which are not part of the traditional leadership canon, including Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court and Isaac Asimov’s wonderful Foundation series. Finding these hidden gems is another great value of this book because it doesn’t shy away from finding value in unlikely places. The diversity of fiction and non-fiction titles on the list provides variety to the reader, a much-needed quality for those tired of trawling through the rote talking points of conventional leadership books.

Beyond the books themselves, the Leader’s Bookshelf provides advice on curating your own library, writing, publishing, and managing your intellectual development in the rigor of our busy lives. These bits of wisdom remind the reader that writing, reflection, and thought leadership are just as important as successfully managing daily work activities.

Five stars for utility, originality, and good writing.

Outstanding book to help expand your own leadership reading list.

Anyone seriously interested in leadership should review this book. It is highly readable, has very interesting chapters at the end on the importance of reading, writing and establishing your own library. This is an excellent guide to starting or expanding your own reading list.

About the Author
Dr Brazelton is a noted pediatrician and author, who developed the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS), used by major hospitals throughout the world. He has written more than two hundred scholarly papers and twenty-four books. He has been described as "America's most celebrated and influential baby doctor since Benjamin Spock".

Dr Nugent is the Founder and Director of the Brazelton Institute at Children's Hospital in Boston and is on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School in the Department of Pediatrics. He is also Professor of Child and Family Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

The clinics was authored by one of the pioneers in neonatal behavioral studies. I found the book really useful. It really makes a difference when one reads directly from a book rather than scrolling down on a computer screen!!
