Sandra Ingerman
Sandra Ingerman, MA, is the author of eight books including Soul Retrieval, Medicine for the Earth, How to Heal Toxic Thoughts, and How to Thrive in Changing Times. With Sounds True, she has published the books Shamanic Journeying: A Beginner’s Guide and Awakening to the Spirit World: The Shamanic Path of Direct Revelation (coauthored with Hank Wesselman) as well as five audio programs, including Shamanic Meditations: Guided Journeys for Insight, Vision, and Healing and Soul Journeys: Music for Shamanic Practice.

Sandra teaches workshops internationally on shamanic journeying, healing, and reversing environmental pollution using spiritual methods. She has trained and founded an international alliance of Medicine for the Earth Teachers and shamanic teachers. Sandra is recognized for bridging ancient cross-cultural healing methods into our modern culture addressing the needs of our times. Excellent for connecting with spiritual

This has been very helpful to me. I'm sure there is excellent psychology behind the exercises. It is very positive throughout. Any examples of negative human traits are brief and to the point, to explain why and how we can change. There is enough material here, and enough exercises, to keep a person busy growing and connecting for a very long time.

I am nearly to the end of the book, even though I have been careful to read only small bits at a time. I like to give myself time to process each bit, to get maximum effect. The book is easy enough to read that I could have finished it quickly, and still gained much, but I wanted to feel it on a deeper level. I know I will be going back through it many times, as these exercises can be helpful done many times, and besides, I can't possibly remember everything.

I wasn't sure I would like this book. If memory serves, that doubt lingered into the very first of the book. I was pleasantly surprised, even amazed at how perfect this book is for what I need at this time. So many great ways to connect with our spiritual self, and the spiritual world.

Sandra Ingerman has a knack for teaching complex concepts in a very accessible way and that is just what she continues to do in her latest book. Weaving personal stories with profound spiritual awakenings, she successfully takes the reader through traditional shamanic thinking to the application of shamanic principles to our modern life and challenges. Always hopeful and inspiring, her work encourages the reader to develop a daily practice that will support and sustain not only the individual but also our planet and all of life.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to deepen their connection with their own guides and helpers and to learn how to expanding our consciousness and extending their connection to nature and the spirit in all things.

NEIL D. PEARSON, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Finance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research includes work on the development, estimation, and evaluation of models for pricing and hedging various derivatives and other financial instruments. Dr. Pearson has published papers in a number of academic journals, and is an Associate Editor of both the Journal of Financial Economics and the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. He has consulted for a number of U.S. and international banks, working on term structure models, the evaluation of derivatives pricing models, and issues that arise in the computation of Value-at-Risk measures. He received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Great set of physiology tutorials

Each module takes a lot of information and presents it in an easy to understand fashion. Some of the modules are a little long and should be viewed in parts. They are also a great reference to keep for physiologic processes that are complex and sometimes difficult to remember completely.

It is an OK program. If you're not buying it for a class, consider this: the experiments for the body systems are all simulated on mechanical setups that do not resemble the organ or body system, and sometimes aren't even organized like the mechanism you're studying. That made it a bit confusing at times (for me) to keep track of what machine was representing which organ.

Otherwise, it worked well and it's easy to use.

A Classical Work of Enlightenment Skepticism

Translator Kirk Watson is to be commended for bringing this translation of Diderot’s allegory to the English-speaking world. This really is a Freethought classic which hopefully will now start to get the recognition it deserves. In this enjoyable little book (more than worth the low price, I might add), Diderot describes three “alleys” or approaches to life.

First we read of the Alley of Thorns, the life of religious belief and devotion (not of ardent theologians alone, as a previous reviewers contends, but all believers). There Diderot imagines people stumbling along the path blindfolded and subject to all sorts of predation from various clergy. This is the best part of the book and filled with biting wit as well as insight. Next we get the Alley of Chestnut Trees, which is a life dedicated to philosophy and scholarship. Finally, we get the Alley of Flowers. This last one is a life devoted to material wealth and satisfying material pleasures. People move along this alley, pursuing pleasure but filled with ennui. People from the other two alleys frequently visit this path, as well.

The best thing about it all is that most of the insights and critiques of all three paths still apply today.

In summary, I highly recommend spending a day or two (it’s a quick read) with this book. Discover Diderot!

Only English Translation I Know Of!

Interestingly enough, I got to this text through needing to translate it myself at the request of a Diderot scholar. Although there might be differences in translation and interpretation (especially in what regards the author's introduction), one must acknowledge the fact that an English translation of The Sceptic's Walk was first available as a Kindle book. It does speak about the digital revolution and this is the most important aspect, I believe, of this book: the importance of self-published texts that mainstream publishers are still not putting out.

The material is oustanding but the french-english translation is lacking sometimes. I grab my french dictionary and I was able to get a better understanding of the ideas.

About the Author

David Z. McSwane, H.S.D., REHS, CFSP, is an Associate Professor of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University. He has more than 25 years of experience in food safety and sanitation working in state and local regulatory agencies and as a consultant to the food industry. Dr. McSwane has published numerous articles and presented papers on a variety of subjects related to food safety.

Dr. McSwane is a nationally recognized trainer in food safety and sanitation. He has taught courses at the university level and for regulatory agencies, food establishments, food industry trade associations, vocational schools, and environmental health associations throughout the United States. Dr. McSwane is a recipient of the Walter S. Mangold award. This is the highest honor bestowed by the National Environmental Health Association. He has been a correspondent for the Food Protection Report and is a member of the Environmental and Public Health Council at Underwriters Laboratories Inc., and the National Automatic Merchandising Association's Health Industry Council.

Nancy Roberts Rue, Ph.D., R.N., has a background in teaching in technical education. Her doctorate is in educational leadership and curriculum and instruction from the University of Florida. With thirty years of experience in higher education and evaluation at Indiana University and St. Petersburg Junior College, she is dedicated to the task of building educational materials that meet the needs of those who want to learn.

Dr. Rue wrote the Handbook for Safe Food Service Management while serving as director of the Certified Professional Food Manager program at National Assessment Institute. The Handbook was designed to give entry-level food managers a single source for study and focused on need-to-know information. She is now an independent writer and consultant on training and development techniques.

Richard Linton, Ph.D., is a Professor of Food Safety at Purdue University. His expertise is in the development and implementation of food safety and food quality programs, specifically in Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems. Dr. Linton spent twelve years working in retail food establishments. In recent years, he has educated food workers and managers from all segments of the industry throughout the nation and the world.

Dr. Linton has developed several different types of food safety training programs for retail food managers and workers. He also works closely with the retail food industry on research projects that help improve the quality and safety of the food.

There are several reference books available in the field of food safety. However, most of these resources are directed toward a particular type of food establishment. The authors of Essentials of Food Safety and Sanitation, 4e believe there is need for a text that applies food safety principles to all food establishments, regardless of type. Chapter 4, Following the Food Product Flow, is the focal point. It clearly defines the important strategies for handling food, from receiving until it is placed in the hands of the consumer. Chapter 5 follows with a comprehensive description about how to apply the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) system to the process.

Food safety has become an issue of special importance for the retail food industry. There are many opportunities for food to be contaminated between production and consumption. Food can be contaminated at the farm, ranch, orchard, or in the sea. Food also can be contaminated at food processing plants and during transport to food establishments. Finally, food can be contaminated during the last stages of production, at retail establishments, and by consumers in their homes.

Food safety is especially critical in retail food establishments because this may be the last opportunity to control or eliminate the hazards that might contaminate food and cause foodborne illnesses. Even when purchased from inspected and approved sources, ingredients may be contaminated when they arrive at the food establishment. It is important to know how to handle these ingredients safely and how to prepare food in such a manner that reduces the risk of contaminated food being served to your clients.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is one of the federal agencies that is responsible for protecting our food supply. The Agency recognizes the importance of proper food handling in retail food establishments. It recommends that retail food managers be able to demonstrate knowledge in food safety.

Food safety in retail food establishments begins with managers who are knowledgeable about food hazards and who are committed to implementing proper food handling practices in their facility. It continues with properly trained food workers who understand the essentials of food safety and sanitation and who will not take short-cuts when it comes to food safety.

The authors of this textbook have been training retail food managers and employees for over 25 years. Many excellent resources are available for this type of training. However, the authors wanted to create a curriculum that was versatile enough to serve all segments of the retail food industry including restaurants, supermarkets, convenience stores, institutional facilities, and vending companies.

The Essentials materials have been proven effective for teaching food safety and sanitation to many different audiences. The authors recommend the textbook and study guide for all of the following training activities:


* Short courses for retail food establishment managers to take in preparation for a national food protection manager certification examination,
* Food safety and sanitation courses in vocational and culinary, arts programs,
* As an introductory course for Food Science Programs in colleges and universities,
* As a self-study program for retail food managers who are preparing to take a national food protection manager certification examination.

One of the most important tasks you face is to train and supervise food workers. Your knowledge is useless if you do not teach employees the correct way to handle food. Learn to recognize any break in standard operating procedures that might endanger food safety. Avoid the problems related to embarrassment, loss of reputation, and financial harm that accompany a foodborne disease outbreak.

Some state and local jurisdictions have passed legislation to require certification of one or more food managers in each establishment. Other jurisdictions are considering doing the same. Most certification programs require candidates to pass a written examination to demonstrate knowledge of food safety and sanitation principles and practices. Some jurisdictions require completion of a food safety course before taking the exam.

Several different examinations are available for certification. In some cases, state and county regulatory agencies have developed their own examinations that apply specifically to their jurisdictions. There is, however, growing support for a nationally recognized examination and credential for food safety. If a national test is recognized by local agencies, a local examination might not be the better choice.

The Conference for Food Protection recognizes food protection manager examinations from the following providers:


* National Registry of Foods Safety Professionals
* Educational Foundation (EF) of the National Restaurant Association
* Experior Assessment (formerly National Assessment Institute, Block and Associates, and Insurance Testing Corporation)
* Dietary Manager's Association

I am using your textbook for a class I teach for the Oklahoma City/County Health Department. I Love It! The class I teach is the Food Service Operator's Certification Course that is required by all food service operators in this county. I am a Registered Dietitian who is contracted by Oklahoma State University-OKC and Francis Tuttle to teach the class for the health department. It is kind of a community service offered by the two schools. I have only been teaching the class for three years now, and by far your book is the best.
Your book has made my job so easy and so much fun! Some of my students are returning to do the re-certification class and bringing managers in who have not taken the class in 20 years. In the past, they have just challenged the test every three years, because they thought the class was too boring. (and they knew it all).
I would highly recommend this book to educators in the nutrition field. I think all nutrition majors need to know this important information. I also recommend it for a reference for my food service managers in my nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Study Guide Available to accompany Essentials Textbook

I wanted to make your users aware of the fact that a Study Guide has been developed to accompany Essentials of Food Safety and Sanitation. There are a growing number of states in America that require retail food managers in their state to be certified in food safety. In many instances, certification is based on the ability to pass a nationally recognized food protection manager certification examination. Many people who are seeking certification desire to have some training in food safety before sitting for the certification exam. However, these people do not always live in areas where such training is readily available. This is why the authors of Essentials of Food Safety and Sanitation developed the Study Guide to accompany the book. The Study Guide is published by Prentice Hall, and its ISBN is 0-13-532144-1.

Meets the training needs for Food Handlers

As an instructor who teaches Food Safety classes to front-line employees, I find this text an excellent resource. It is comprehensive yet still easy-to-understand, a difficult combination to achieve for some of the technical aspects of foodborne illness, pathogens, etc. The cartoon-style drawings add to the enjoyment. I have had many trainees who share these positive comments. Only negative comment would be to include color photos instead of the old, grainy B&W.

About the Author

Steve Byers received his B.A. and M.A. from Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, CO. His Master’s Thesis, entitled “A reconstruction of the skull of Gigantopithecus blacki”, formed the basis for YFX Studio's full reconstruction of Gigantopithecus on display at the San Diego Museum of Man. His first teaching job was at the University of Southern Colorado (now call Colorado State Universiy, Pueblo) where he taught Anthropology for two and a half years. From there, he worked as a social and psychological researcher until he decided that his true love was Anthropology. He enrolled at the University of New Mexico (UNM) in Albuquerque, NM, where he studied skeletal biology and bioarchaeology.


Since graduating in 1992, he has taught part-time at the various campuses of UNM as well as Santa Fe Community College. When given the opportunity to teach a forensic anthropology class at UNM in 1998, he realized that the field lacked a comprehensive textbook. Since no one appeared to be writing one, he decided to take on the project. The first edition of his textbook, published by Allyn and Bacon (since subsumed under Prentice Hall), appeared in 2002, and has been put into new editions three times. The book received a very favorable review in the Journal of Forensic Sciences, as well as several regional anthropology associations.

This book was assigned for a class, however, I feel the book covers forensics very superficially and would not be a good buy if you're considering forensics professionally. I still keep referring to Tim White's Osteology book for better supplementation.

Good Textbook overall for Introduction

Introduction to Forensic Anthropology was a good text book for learning the basics of Forensic Anthropology, it did a great job for the most part. Unlike the 3rd Edition it has been updated and the terms used in the textbook are more accurate.
