The Farm Book, reproduced here in facsimile, is a wide-ranging depiction of the agricultural and industrial activities on Jefferson's plantations, primarily Monticello and Poplar Forest. In Thomas Jefferson's Farm Book, the late Edwin Morris Betts, professor of biology at the University of Virginia, embellishes this agricultural journal with illuminating commentary and relevant extracts selected from Jefferson's correspondence and other memorandum books. Organized topically, the annotations and extracts paint a uniquely complete portrait of plantation life and activity.

Jefferson's records reveal an experimental farm, implementing such innovations as horizontal plowing, a crop-rotation plan, and Jefferson's own revolutionary moldboard plow. In addition, the Farm Book is a window to slave life, containing Jefferson's notes regarding the rations his overseer distributed, the daily tasks required by particular slaves, and the number of yards he purchased for slaves' clothing. The book also portrays the industries pursued by enslaved and free workmen, including th Mulberry Row nailery, joinery, blacksmith's shop, and spinning and weaving house.

Edwin Morris Betts (1892-1958) was professor of biology at the University of Virginia for thirty-one years. He first became interested in Jefferson's gardening and farming pursuits while studying the trees Jefferson imported from abroad for planting on the grounds of the University. His scholarly legacy also includes his editing of Thomas Jefferson's Garden Book.

He was not just our 3rd president, he was also ahead of his time with his large farm and the things he brought to America to grow, raise and even experiment with therein. I highly recommend this book for those wishing to learn a bit about President Jefferson as well as about some of the things he raised and brought to the light of our young country...rl

Worth the effort to find a copy

I recently acquired a copy of the 1996 English edition from AGMuller (isbn 3898756491). This is a simultaneously an esoteric and very down to earth tarot. The artwork draws on contemporary themes and images, which make them very accessible. For me, the most notable aspect of this tarot is the astrological significations. Rather than using traditional Golden Dawn, Thoth, or various French and 'Egyptian' systems, the author draws on The Elemental Tarot by Smith and Astrop for astrological correspondences. If you are a competent or advanced astrologer, especially one versed in planetary pairs or midpoints, you will love this deck. The elemental keywords on the minors are also very elegant. Not perfect, but very close to it.

In the companion text, the author's comments on the deck and approach to interpretation are generous and insightful. This is a thoroughly modern deck, by a person committed to a spiritual path. The substantive LWB (100pages) reflects this and is a wise guide to cultivation of the self, like most esoteric tarot. In many ways, it is more pragmatic and gentle. Hints, affirmations and suggestions are options for each card, as well as the main and astrological summary. One wouldn't expect to agree with all of them, but the author's experience and accessible writing are notable.

As this is a true tarot, it is also a good reading deck. Experienced users of RWS and related tarots will notice departures and resonances.

I was surprised to like the artwork more in person than on the computer screen. The scale of the cards and excellent production are well suited to the artist's method and aesthetics. The smaller, easy to handle size of the deck and its clarity leave me wanting a copy for home and one to carry with me.

Again, I strongly recommend this deck to modern astrologers and those wanting to develop insights into astrology through imagery. Looking through the deck, I was interested to see the cards assigned to planets I have in aspect, and found myself in agreement, as well as getting a few surprises. Setting up horoscopic spreads this way could be very fruitful for introspection, as well as forecasting.

Tarot card devotees may find the astrology confusing or difficult, but it can be ignored. The images and elements predominate. Astrologers will see much greater depth in the system than can be conveyed in a single book. This is a model that deserves to be adopted by other tarot artists who understand the great contribution astrologer John Astrop has made to cartomancy and pathworking.

Experimental Tarot makes this intelligent and sensitive choice, and in my opinion, bests the Elemental through more communicative and accessible imagery, if not artistry. By focusing on the numerological and elemental qualities of the suits, the Experimental Tarot, like the Elemental, results in a balanced, natural contemporary system. As in astrology, the combinations can be read by dignity, harmony, and with clear understanding of the best and worst expressions of any energy. Traditionally difficult planetary combinations and cards are opened to more interpretations with a departure or two (10 of Earth) while remaining true to form and accurate.

It is definitely a must for astrologers, collectors, serious students of symbolism across systems, people with flexible minds, and anyone who likes the system of the Elemental Tarot. I hope to see more tarot with this excellent elemental and astrological model.

Great Deck.

I must say, I love this deck. I've been interested in tarot cards for about the past three years. And during the first two years I could never, not once find a Deck I honestly liked. They were all so confusing, and different, and wonky. But then one day I stumbled upon this Deck and I've loved it ever since. I somehow made a connection with this Deck, unlike with every other I ever came into contact with. This Deck is by far the simplest I've ever used, and it's one of the most diverse Decks I've ever seen. If you're looking for a nice tarot deck, then choose this one. It's worth the money.

Pleasure in writing

Frances Saunders was exactly the author for this work. She knew these women, especially Isabel, very well and Fran's husband David Saunders [Princeton ETS] worked "the midnight oil" helping develop the original MBTI. Katherine, Isabel and Frances are the three women of the 20th Century. Everyone having known them misses them dearly and treasures their stories. A wonderful [repeat wonderful] read!.

Wretched, unfortunately

As a recently qualified MBTI practitioner I very much looked forward to reading this book, hoping that it would shed light on the history of the MBTI and those who created it, but I was sadly disappointed. The quality of the prose is below average and the author has little or no sense of how to weave facts into a coherent narrative. Katharine and Isabel certainly deserved better. The book serves up a disjointed and seemingly endless litany of Briggs-Myers family trivialities, so much so that most of it reads like a Christmas letter, but it has very little to say about Jung, the development of type theory or the MBTI itself. Don't waste your time with this one.

Not the most informative book on Egyptian history, but then again it IS an ATLAS!

Many people are writing that this book did not satisfy their desire for facts and more in-depth explanations of Egyptian history, and that the book's text is not informative. This book is not meant for that purpose, and is really and truly an atlas. The maps are what matter.
In that reguard it serves its purpose and more. The maps are extremely easy to follow, clearly labelled and idenitified, colorful, and most of all- informative. One can tell so much about a period of history by analyzing a map, particularly several which have trade routes, battle sites, important roads and cultural sites CLEARLY marked. Who could ask for anything more! This atlas is wonderful, and is, I repeat, an atlas.
Anyways? What kind of person sits down and reads an atlas? I mean, seriously, its just a reference book, its not a novel. Its not supposed to tell wonderful stories and dazzle you with vibrant facts, its just maps, and anything else, is extra.

Interesting idea

This book provides a great deal of information on 3000 years of Egyptian history in an unusual format. The book consists of many single-page essays on a particular topic or period, with the essay on the left side of the page, and the corresponding map on the other side of the page, which illustrates what's going on in the text. It's sort of an interesting way to write a history book of ancient Egypt, and I thought it worked out pretty well. Although not your typical history, it's still an interesting and useful book, especially for getting a quick overview of a particular subject or topic.

A Pretty Good Job

Much nonsense has been written about ancient Egypt, trying too hard to
simplify its huge complexities over 3,000 and more years. Its history is
mainly known through Manetho, an Egyptian priest who wrote in Greek
from sources he could not identify. Known not in Manetho's writing but
in references in the works of non-Egyptian writers, like Josephus. Bill
Manley has put together an historical atlas that combines pages of informed
textual information and engaging maps. There are gaps in his coverage, and
not everyone will agree with some of his descriptions or map borderlines. For
example, he is not very clear on the pre-Israelites and the Israelites. Sad to say,
neither is anybody else. But this is as good an historical atlas of ancient Egypt
as there is.

I love this book. Finally someone thinks similar to me. Great for anyone who thinks outside the box. I have had some spooky experiences in my lifetime. I hope the right audience finds this book. There are similar books out there which deal with metaphysical issues. Not quite religious and not quite spiritual - rather a nice blend of both. I will treasure this and re-read it often.
