Perfect Timing

In this ugly world of bullying, war and drive-by shootings, how divine to read stories about ordinary people who discover that dealing with difficult issues can be easier if one maintains a positive attitude. This book gives me hope that this world is still filled with amazing people. I read the book once and have started re-reading it again! Love it!

This is what the world needs NOW!

I LOVE THIS BOOK! It is so uplifting. Divided into categories so you can go to a specific section, this book offers stories, all short, of optimism that make you smile are so uplifting, altruistic, endearing, relational - so many hit home in different ways. We live in a world where the news is negative and it is discussed over and over again. Get this book, all the proceeds go to charities by the way, read it from front to back and then use it as a reference when a specific area of your life needs to have a little more light shining in it. It's a quick read, it's a fabulous book, I dare say it would convert the most pessimistic of people. This is the first in a series and I cannot wait to see what the next book will bring. Inspiring and thought provoking - kudos to David Mezzapelle, I wholeheartedly give it a A+++++. I will be giving this book as a gift to many - don't forget to gift yourself.

I have been touched by the heartfelt stories in Contagious Optimism. It takes a lot of courage to share some of the life chanllenges that the writers have faced and the way they have persevered with determination, optimism and hope for a positive outcome. Because the authors come from all walks of life,there are many topics and life events that are found in C. O. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for support, wants to build a reserve of contagious optimism or is looking for an uplifting read.

A great tool for improvment

The Staright-A Conspiracy hits home with me.

What I liked:

+ It is a book which everyone can pick up.
+ It has a lot of insight and offers great explanations (even though I myself found it to be almost too thurrow).
+ Demonstrates the potential of every person and really convinces the reader that they, as well as everyone else, can pursuit and achieve greatness.

What I thought could be improved:

- The Straight-A conspiracy has a lot of small boxes with "interesting" and vaguely related facts. I myself found some of them amusing, but they were, generally, just distracting.
- (I cannot believe I am writing this, but) The book tries too hard to be easy to read. It talks directly to the reader in a almost silly way from time to time.

Overall, it is a book I wish I would have read five years ago; however, even to a student at university, such as myself, the book was a good read. If you are struggling with school or just generally want to improve your outlook on learning new things, this is one of many books which might help you.

Excellent high School Text

I teach a high school course for struggling students. These are kids who have tremendous aptitude but have lost confidence in their ability to be good students. They think of themselves as not smart, bad at math, and believe those "facts" will never change. Reading this book together has transformed their stinking thinking and given them simple tools to begin turning those grades around. Understanding that practice is what makes a genius and that all information was once new to everyone on earth has given them hope that they, too, can master everything from Algebra to Elizabethan sonnets. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Full of gems

This is a book, I wish like the lottery I had as a kid. I am a video gaming, internet addicted, collegiate C student and part time athlete. Although with shame I admit, for the first time in my adult life, I can say I read a book front to back multiple times just for myself. Not only is it full of "Aha" insight, it's easy to read. This is especially true for someone frustrated with learning complex new things well, or quickly (I'm pointing to myself). If you can't get your kid to read it, read it for them or read it to them. We need this type of wisdom as a country and as a species. Thank you Hunter Maats for breaking down and spelling out this problem. This is a well priced book. The delivery was also very satisfying.

Writing at the end of the great flowering of philosophical inquiry in Warring States, China, when the foundations for traditional Chinese thought were laid, Xunzi occupies in the East a place analogous to that of Aristotle in the West. The collection of works bearing his name contains not only the most systematic philosophical exposition by any early Confusian thinker but also accounts for virtually every aspect of the intellectual, cultural, and political life of his time.

This is the second of three volumes that will constitute the first complete translation of Xunzi into English and published in 1990. The first volume, covering Books 1-6 and dealing with self-cultivation, learning, and education, was published in 1988. The present volume consists of Books 7-16 and deals with political theory, ethics, and ideal man, and the lessons to be drawn from history.

In the third volume, published in 1994, books 17-24, discusses problems of knowledge and logic; the fundamental nature of the world; the significance of music and ritual; and the nature of man. Books 25-32 contain Xunzi's poetry, a miscellany of short passages collected together in one book, and several collections of sayings, comments, and exemplary anecdotes about events, personages, and ideas important to early Confusians.

The translation is accompanied by substantial explanatory material identifying technical terms, persons, and events; detailed introductions to each book; and extensive annotation, with characters when desirable, indicating the basis of the translations.

New Ideas, Great Writing

The molecule is oxytocin. You might be familiar with it from its role in inducing childbirth and lactation. It actually plays a huge role in maternal behavior, as well as pair bonding and pro-social behavior in general. You get a surge of it when you have sex, get a hug, see a baby, hear from an old friend. Its reputation as the love drug is well deserved.

Zak did a couple of interesting things with this hormone. First, he studied it, in a lab setting. Second, he used it to come up with a pretty comprehensive model that explains a lot of human behavior.

Zak's experiments were rather unusual. For one thing, he actually took blood to measure subjects' oxytocin levels. For another, he concentrated on typical economics experiments (the ultimatum game, for example). That's why what he's done has been jokingly called "vampire economics."

What he found is pretty interesting stuff, and basically lays to rest the old notion of homo economicus - the old "reasonable man" acting in his own "rational self-interest." This may be surprising only to economists, but Zak found that people are as emotional as they are rational, and that doing unto others makes you feel pretty darn good and is as much a motivator - if not more - than acquisitiveness.

This leads into his model where oxytocin starts a virtuous cycle of trust, caring, and all sorts of good stuff. He contrasts that with a vicious cycle based on testosterone. He then uses these models and his findings to speculate about quite a bit. For example, he:

Zak is also an excellent writer. Great stories, humor, and a style that makes for very easy reading.

My only reservations were for the last two chapters, where he goes a little overboard with his speculations. These chapters are not as closely tied to experiments, and get quite wooly, full of platitudes, and somewhat over-blown.

Overall, though, this is one of the best books I've read in quite awhile.

Good to trust

This book is about the hormone oxytocin (which is principally a female hormone but also present in the male). This hormone is the molecule referred to in the title of the book. "Am I actually saying that a single molecule...accounts for why some people give freely of themselves and others are coldhearted bastards, why some people cheat and steal and others you can trust with your life, why some husbands are more faithful than others, and, by the way, why some women tend to be more generous - and nicer - than men?" asks the author Paul Zak. "In a word, yes" he answers.

This molecule as Zak calls it, is a "feel good" hormone that increases when we do simple, feel good things like giving or receiving a hug, or when we give generously. The act of giving stimulates this hormone resulting in the recipient desiring to trust the giver. Zak explains that there is also a counter hormone ("testosterone") which he calls the "bad boy" hormone that increases the impulse to take risk and behave badly. However, testosterone is necessary for physical courage and strength. Thus, the mammalian animal evolved with these two hormones balancing each other and so many of the unusual behavior Zak says, can be attributed to an imbalance of those hormones.

From the general effects and the origin of this hormone in the evolutionary process, Zak discusses specific topics such as the effect of oxytocin deprivation in orphans. He also discusses the influence of oxytocin inclining people to religion. Zak believes, however, that religion serves a useful purpose regardless of whether God exists or not. Some parts of his theory concerning the connections between oxytocin in early civilisations may be controversial insofar as he postulates that oxytocin influence on the feel good factor leads people to have warm feelings which are interpreted as "love" and its connection to sex, and from there to procreation and creation. So maybe for the religious God is love but for scientists like Zak, love is God. It is a fascinating and illuminating book on the whole if one is interested in what makes us tick.

Terrific science combined with storytelling

Paul Zak. Remember the name. No, you need not. His name will come back time and again. He is a shooting star in economics and neuroeconomics. Moral Moelcule is a terrific book. Great science and great storytelling. In traditional economics, morality is an add-on. Something that must be constructed or realized through man-made rules and constitutional constraints on people's collective decision making, and for market-based decision making to work at all. Zak points to how such constraints might not have a prayer of making markets viable without the evolved chemistry of the brain that makes cooperation and trust self-rewarding. Great read, and I felt compelled to post this comment after the first four chapters, in spite of the fact that his arguments are unsettling for me as a traditional economist. I look forward to spending time with the rest of the book. Take a glimpse of the future of economics through this book. Very highly recommended.

Good Follow Up to Quiet Strength

Recently retired Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy delivers an outstanding follow-up to his bestseller Quiet Strength in his new book, Uncommon. The name of the book is derived from a quote by former University of Minnesota coach Cal Stoll, who said:

"Success is uncommon, therefore not to be enjoyed by the common man. I'm looking for uncommon people."

Dungy first heard these words as a freshman on Stoll's football team almost three decades ago, and they have stayed with him ever since. The only difference is that it is now Dungy summoning men to an uncommon life of significance.

The book does not differ much from Quiet Strength, as it is written in a casual tone similar to most sports figure's memoirs. It is, however, less autobiographical, leaning more toward an advisory manual on how to live life. It is divided into seven parts, each dealing with important issues that men deal with in their lives, such as family, friends, career, and relationship with Christ. It is sprinkled with stories from Dungy's personal life which illustrate the themes of each chapter. Perhaps most refreshing is the coach's tone. He is never condescending or preachy, adamently proclaiming that his way is the best way. Reading this book is almost like talking to a big brother who is handing out advice because he's been there.

For those who are weary of self-help books, have no fear. Dungy's focus is on service to God, family, and fellow man. There are no get-rich quick schemes in this book, or promises of blessings. This is just Tony Dungy trying to instruct men how to be better husbands, fathers, and human beings. He doesn't claim to have all the answers; he's just willing to share what he's been through.

It's a quick, easy read, and there's enough football mixed in to keep most guys interested. There's a Q & A with Tony Dungy in the back, giving his opinion on more direct questions. My only knock on this book is the goofy picture of Dungy on the back cover. But it's definitely worth the money. Tony Dungy scores again.

The Road Less Traveled

Tony Dungy, best selling author of Quiet Strength, has penned another Super Bowl quality book in Uncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance. The two books cover similar terrain: how to win in life. However, Dungy's latest work focuses especially on how young men can pursue and achieve a life of significance and success.

Dungy is eminently qualified to write such a book, given his lifetime of leadership coaching not only athletes in sports, but men in the proverbial game of life. Additionally, his own drive for success, not simply defined by wins and loses, but by other-centered relationships, is Dungy's ultimate qualification for writing Uncommon.

Dungy begins by defining success, not from the world's perspective, but from his Christian worldview. He then notes how uncommon true success and significance are, outlines many of the reasons, and prescribes practical pathways: attitudes, ambitions, and allegiances.

What Rick Warren achieved with Purpose Driven Life, Tony Dungy has accomplished with Uncommon. Both books are user-friendly, easy-reads, without being dumbed-down or simplistic. And both books, while maintaining a Judea-Christian ethic, are not preachy.

Three Things I Learned from This Book

Tony Dungy, head coach for the Indianapolis Colts, can't help but speak from his faith. It saturates his life, his work and his personal history. Anyone who knows anything about this man knows he's a Christian believer.

His first and previous book, "Quiet Strength," was autobiographical, with a little help from co-author Nathan Whitaker. So it focused on his upbringing in Detroit, the powerful influence of his parents and family, how he came to professional football, his faith, and all of the career triumphs and tragedies that led to the Colts winning the Super Bowl.

"Uncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance" is also autobiographical, but only in the sense that it distills how this man lives his life, or strives to. There is much to admire here -- would that we all strive to live our lives like this man has, and teach our sons and daughters to do the same.

He says at least three things in this book I found especially insightful, regardless of one's faith or lack of it.

First, what you do is less important than how you do it. The "how" ultimately has much more influence and impact than the "what."

Second, the opposite of courage is not cowardice. The opposite of courage is conformity. I had to think about that for a while but he's got it exactly right.

Third, don't let the bad things that happen to you define who you are as a person. Instead, what defines you as a person is how you respond to the bad things, and the good things, too, for that matter.

In "Uncommon," Tony Dungy says obvious things -- treat people well; love and honor your wife; teach and be there for your children; see successes and failures for what they are; character matters. That they sound surprising or "preachy" says a lot more about us and our culture than it does about the author.

Fantastic intro to Computer Science. Progressing from "Concrete to Abstract" concepts. Easy to read and understand.

I have been working in IT industry for the past 20 years. I was looking for a good intro and overview of computer science for my 16 year old son who is starting to program in Python. I read it first before recommending it to him and fell in love with the text. It is kept at a perfect level of abstraction for a student to comprehend the subject with a moderate level of difficulty. I love how author progresses from "concrete to abstract" in each chapter and throughout the book and concludes with a brief intro to the Theory of Computing. My son is getting into it too.

One of the better introduction to CS books

This isn't a book about programming, it isn't a book about laying out a spreadsheet, reading this book isn't going to give you skills on the latest Microsoft operating system.
It's a book on COMPUTER SCIENCE. Computer Science is more related to math than the "computers" most people think of. It isn't practical, it's theoretical -- it's supposed to be.
It cracks me up to read the reviews where the reader just doesn't get the whole premise of the book.
I first read this book in the Fourth Edition when I had a CS-101 class. About 8 years have passed, and I'm considering going for a MSCS, so I wanted a refresher. This book was invaluable in the 4th Ed, the 7th Ed is even better. The material is easier to follow, better diagrams, and expanded material.
Get it if you want a good overview of Computer Science -- if you're looking for Microsoft training, look elsewhere.

About the Author

John Tobey received his BA in mathematics from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, in 1965, his MA in mathematics education from Harvard University in 1966, and his PhD in mathematics education from Boston University in 1980. He has taught in the mathematics department at the United States Military Academy at West Point and served as the Mathematics Department Chairman at North Shore Community College in Danvers, Massachusetts, for five years. John has served as the president of the New England Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges. He has received the NISOD award for outstanding teaching from the University of Texas at Austin. John is the author of seven mathematics books published by Pearson Education. John has spoken to many mathematics departments and at many professional meetings throughout the country on the topic of developmental mathematics education and distance learning in mathematics. He lives in Massachusetts.

Jeffrey Slater has been a professor at North Shore Community College for thirty-eight years and received the Teacher of the Year award in 2002. Jeff travels around the country speaking on student retention and is also a consultant to the Federal Government. He lives in Lexington, Massachusetts, with his wife Shelley and his yellow lab Gracie.

Jamie Blair has directed the Mathematics Learning Center at Orange Coast College for the past seventeen years. She designed, developed, and implemented the center, and as a result of this effort, has provided technical expertise related to the particulars of the Math Center to numerous other two-year colleges and at many conferences. In 2007, Jamie was appointed to the Team of Basic Skills Specialists by the California State Academic Senate. She is also currently participating on Title 3 committees on her campus. She specializes in teaching students who have never been successful in mathematics. She is an expert in the area of basic skills in relation to the learning needs of students. She lives in California.

Jennifer Crawford received her BS in mathematics from the University of Minnesota–Duluth in 1995 and her MS in mathematics from the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities in 1998. She taught a wide range of courses at North Shore Community College in Danvers, Massachusetts for five years. She currently teaches at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minnesota, where her focus is working with developmental math students. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with her husband, two young children, and black lab.
