Suzanne R. Goodney Lea is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, where she teaches criminology courses and research methods. She earned her Ph.D. from Indiana University in 2005. She is a member of the American Sociological Association and the American Society of Criminology and is Secretary-Treasurer for the Information and Public Policy Section of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

childhood and animal cruelty

I definitely plan to read this book so that I can learn about some of the reasearch being done on why some children, especially boys, engage in animal cruelty. Growing up, my friends and I engaged in animal cruelty. We lived near a wooded area and were pretty much unsupervised. I guess adults assumed children could roam freely in the forest and do whatever they pleased. We had slingshots and what do you think children with slingshots are going to aim at? It was not an everyday occurrence but it happened every now and then. We outgrew that unfortunate aspect of our childhood when we became teens. As far as I know, none of us went on to become criminals. In fact, we regret the harm we did to animals. I became a vegetarian and now I'm sensitive to all animals, even insects. Even if I see a mouse or a rat in my house, I don't set up traps. I often think, what if I could go back and undo all the damage.

Not worth the price

This book is an overpriced study on the link between animal cruelty and human cruelty. The author doesn't believe one exists which is why I bought the book. I wanted to hear the other side of the argument. If I had known what population she was using to base her facts on I wouldn't have ever bothered. I wonder if she will change her opinion once she has a few more years behind her if she continues in this field. She had just graduated when this book was published and I have a feeling it was just her thesis. Very disappointing.

Grade 3-5-This book is by no means a comprehensive resource; instead, it delivers interesting facts on an assortment of mammals, insects, fish, and birds. The chapter "Saying it with sound" shares select nuggets of information about the calls and percussive noises employed by certain monkeys, birds, elephants, and some marine life. "Saying it with smell" covers the ways in which some species generate odors from their bodies to send mating messages, mark territory, and direct others of their species to food. Other chapters examine body language, vibrations, luminescence, and sign language. The end of each unit features a simple exercise designed to reinforce the preceding lesson; some of them are more easily reproduced by children than others. The exercise on smell, for instance, simply requires participants to blindfold a friend and then wave a perfumed piece of paper towel; Kaner's study of vibrations, on the other hand, introduces Morse code and requires considerably more manual dexterity and abstract thought. Douglas's photo-realistic artwork contributes considerably to the overall effectiveness of this presentation. Browsers will find their curiosity piqued by this fine introduction to communication throughout the animal kingdom.

Packed with interesting facts, this spacious, large-size picture book combines a lively, informal text with big, bright, realistic illustrations, photographs as well as original artwork, that show animals in their environment. The format is similar to the DK design, but it's less busy. Each double-page spread brings together a wide range of wild creatures. There are chapters on communication with sound, smell, and body language, and one section shows how giraffes, elephants, zebras, and lions on the African savanna "say hello." In one picture a firefly is sending light messages with its body; in another, a peacock spreads its glory across two pages. A final section about communication between animals and humans looks at zoologists' work with dolphins and chimpanzees. There are also occasional experiments for children to do with adult help. Unfortunately, there are no sources for children who want more, but this is still an excellent choice for sharing and reading aloud. Hazel Rochman

Beautiful book about how animals communicate

Stunningly illustrated (a true labor of love!), this book should go far to educate children about animal communication. In this day and age of wiping out species, I'm hoping its use will create respect for non-human beings with whom we share this world.

Winner of Animal Behavior Society Children's Book Award 2003

Animal Talk is the most recent contribution to an excellent series of animal behavior and ecology books by Etta Kaner and is the recipient of the Animal Behavior Society's 2003 Outstanding Children's Book Award. The book presents animal communication by dividing communication up by context, including "Saying it with Sound," "Saying it with Smell," and "Body language." In each section, Greg Douglas' outstanding illustrations are paired with descriptions of appropriate examples, often including the method of communication (e.g. woodpeckers hammering on hollow logs to send sound over 1 km) and the possible functions of the behavior (e.g. calling for a mate or defending its territory). Also present in each section are two clever and engaging approaches: hands-on experiments that demonstrate a particular point (e.g. waving a paper towel near perfume to demonstrate why ring-tailed lemurs wave their tails during fights) and a "If you were a (animal species)" box, in which more facts are given for a particular species (e.g. "If you were a howler monkey, you'd live in the tropical rainforests of South America..."). Animal Talk does a nice job of including both familiar animals, such as tigers and dolphins, as well as less familiar animals, such as California ground squirrels and water striders. Each section has enough examples to effectively illustrate the point but not so many as to make it difficult to read. However, this book does include lots of information and for younger readers it may be best tackled one section at a time. Children readers consistently commented that they liked the pictures, the amount of information, and the experiments that they could try.

Helps put things into place

If you've ever wondered (as I have), when is the Marriage Supper of the Lamb? Which comes first, the Battle of Armageddon or the Battle of Gog and Magog? What happens to people who come to Christ during the Tribulation - how do they get into the Kingdom, or do they even get in? Or any of a myriad other questions about the order of End Times events, then you need to read this book. Dr. Jimmy DeYoung has a knack for taking complicated texts and laying them out in a way even a child could understand. (As he points out in the preface, that's where all this got started - teaching Revelation to children!)

I would highly recommend this to anyone who is at all confused by the Last Days Bible prophecies, anyone who is on the fence about Pretrib / posttrib / mid-trib / other, or anyone who wants to be able to answer questions from those who are (Bible study leaders, Sunday School teachers, Pastors, witnesses, etc.).

Even if you have it down in your own mind, this is an excellent guide to help you know how to explain it to others in a clear, step-by-step, this-then-this-then-this fashion. By looking at the book of Revelation chronologically instead of chapter order, it makes much more sense to a layman like me. I especially like the timeline graphics throughout the book to let you know at a glance when the events being discussed will take place.

Jimmy does a fine job of sorting out what's being portrayed in this book about the end times. He makes clear each instance of events that are not given chronologically so the time line makes sense.

A great read for beginning Bible Prophecy students (or old pros)

This is a good read especially if you are new to Bible Prophecy and Revelation confuses you. This book discusses Revelation in chronological order, not in the order it is written which is sometimes confusing as there are "parenthesis" in the chapters that tends to get new readers confused. Highly recommended!!
