About the Author
Russell A. Barkley, PhD, ABPP, ABCN, is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Barkley has published numerous books and more than 260 scientific articles and book chapters on ADHD, executive functioning, and childhood defiance. He is also the editor of the newsletter The ADHD Report. Dr. Barkley is well known for his pioneering research on ADHD in both children and adults. His rating scales are based on more than 16 years of research using prototypes of the scales, and are normed on large samples representative of the U.S. population. An Essential Tool for Therapists

As a therapist and coach focused on individuals with Asperger's, autism and ADHD, I find that understanding the topic of Executive Function is central to helping clients make real progress. Russell Barkley, a leader in the field of ADHD and a pioneer in taking a scientific approach to the condition, has put together the most comprehensive and useful self assessment scales in his book Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale (BDEFS).
I find myself giving this assessment to almost all my adult clients. With Barkley's thorough analysis of different aspects of executive functioning, and comparative normed charts, individuals are able to understand just how severe their own deficits might be. With this information, we're able to come up with solid treatment options utilizing each client's own particular profile of strengths and weaknesses.
The best aspect of this scale is that it includes a limited license to photocopy the measurement tools. For individual therapists trying to work scientifically within the constraints of a private practice, it's invaluable to be able to apply science in a statistical valid way to a small caseload.
This book is indispensable for therapists dealing with clients with executive function issues.
