A landmark text for developing speed

A landmark text for developing speed in all athletes and should be required reading for anyone in physical preparation. James is a unique thinker who does a superb job of taking complex ideas and simplifying them to their core to make them readily applicable. Literally every aspect of speed development is covered, from warm up to mechanics to differences in acceleration and max velocity sprinting to incorporating tempo and recovery methods; a truly comprehensive text. Of real value is the actual training programs James himself used to prepare athletes from Division1 Collegiate football, track and field, and international rugby which provide the reader an inside look at the principles and ideas in the text used in actual practice with elite and developmental athletes.

The principals in this text are used on a daily basis in the development of speed in Super Rugby and International Rugby sevens players I work with.

I cannot recommend this book any higher.

As an author of 3 books relating to Sprints and Hurdles, I can truly recommend Applied Sprint Training as a source of information for all Sprint Coaches as well as all Speed-Power Sports (football, rugby, soccer, etc.). It is wastes no words or pages in getting right to the heart of speed and power development principles from biomechanics to specific training methods and beyond. The examples of training design for various sports (and even the various positions within sports like football linemen, backs, etc.) mesh expertly with the material presented within the book. Although the photos are of low quality they do not detract from concise, well presented and applicable information that covers all any coach would need to know in order to develop speed for their athletes in any sport.

Fantastic resource for those interested in true sprint training. What makes the resource so valuable is that it bridges the gap between theory and application. James is arguably one of the most knowledgeable individuals regarding physical preparation and in particular sprinting. Many ideas are born from the late Charlie Francis and while all of that material is available for purchase, James put it together in a single manual making it extremely easy to implement. Great for those looking for help with implementing speed work with field athletes.

One of the few useful speed manuals out there. Buy it if you want to improve your athletes' success.

About the Author
Ricky W. Griffin serves as Distinguished Professor of Management and Blocker Chair in Business at Texas A&M. He received his Ph.D. in organizational behavior from the University of Houston. He served as editor of the Journal of Management and as an officer in the Southwest Regional Division of the Academy of Management, the Southern Management Association, and the Research Methods Division and the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management. Dr. Griffin spent three years on the faculty at the University of Missouri (Columbia) before moving to Texas A&M University in 1981. His research interests include workplace violence, employee health and well-being in the workplace, and workplace culture. A well-respected author recognized for his organizational behavior and management research, Dr. Griffin has written many successful textbooks, including: Management, Organizational Behavior, HR, Management Skills, Introduction to Business, and International Business.

Gregory Moorhead is an associate professor of management at Arizona State University. He attended Texas Tech University and the University of Houston. He earned his BSIE, M.B.A., and Ph.D. in organizational behavior and management. He joined the faculty at ASU in 1978 and has taught courses in management principles, management policy and strategy, personnel management, and operations management, as well as graduate seminars in organizational behavior and international management. Dr. Moorhead has written numerous articles that have been published in leading managerial journals, including ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT JOURNAL, ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT REVIEW, HUMAN RELATIONS, ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR AND HUMAN DECISION PROCESSES, EDUCATIONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL MEASUREMENT, JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES, and others. His research focuses on the fields of groupthink, group decision-making, job design, leadership, and organization structure. He frequently travels internationally with his students, giving him a unique first-hand perspective on numerous global topics.

Not much to say about text books. This one is not as bad as most text books, it is better than most in its layout and depth of content. It is by no means the ultimate book on organizational behavior, but it is one of the better ones. Just with it wasn't so darn expensive.

About the Author

Victoria O’Donnell is Professor Emerita and former director of the University Honors Program and Professor of Communication at Montana State University–Bozeman. She also taught a seminar in television criticism for the School of Film and Photography at Montana State University. Previously she was the chair of the Department of Speech Communication at Oregon State University and chair of the Department of Communication and Public Address at the University of North Texas. In 1988 she taught for the American Institute of Foreign Studies at the University of London. She received her PhD from the Pennsylvania State University. She has published articles and chapters in a wide range of journals and books on topics concerning persuasion, the social effects of media, women in film and television, British politics, Nazi propaganda, collective memory, cultural studies theory, and science fiction films of the 1950s. She is also the author (with June Kable) of Persuasion: An Interactive-Dependency Approach, Propaganda and Persuasion (with Garth Jowett), Readings in Propaganda and Persuasion: New and Classic Essays (co-edited with Garth Jowett), Television Criticism, and Speech Communication. She made a film, Women, War, and Work: Shaping Space for Productivity in the Shipyards During World War II, for PBS through KUSM Public Television at Montana State University. She has also written television scripts for environmental films and has done voice-overs for several PBS films. She served on editorial boards of several journals. The recipient of numerous research grants, honors, and teaching awards, including being awarded the Honor Professorship at North Texas State University and the Montana State University Alumni Association and Bozeman Chamber of Commerce Award of Excellence, she has been a Danforth Foundation Associate and a Summer Scholar of the National Endowment for the Humanities. She has taught in Germany and has been a visiting lecturer at universities in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Wales. She has also served as a private consultant to the U.S. government, a state senator, the tobacco litigation plaintiffs, and many American corporations. She is an active volunteer with Intermountain Therapy Animals, taking her Golden Retriever, Gabriel, to the elementary schools where the children read to the dog in the R.E.A.D. program. She writes children’s stories about Gabriel. She is currently writing a novel about Ireland.

About the Author
Clarice Lispector was born in 1920 to a Jewish family in western Ukraine. As a result of the anti-Semitic violence they endured, the family fled to Brazil in 1922, and Clarice Lispector grew up in Recife. Following the death of her mother when Clarice was nine, she moved to Rio de Janeiro with her father and two sisters, and she went on to study law. With her husband, who worked for the foreign service, she lived in Italy, Switzerland, England, and the United States, until they separated and she returned to Rio in 1959; she died there in 1977. Since her death, Clarice Lispector has earned universal recognition as Brazil's greatest modern writer.

Benjamin Moser is the author of Why This World: A Biography of Clarice Lispector, which was a finalist for the National Book Critics' Circle Award, and is also the editor of a new translation of�Clarice Lispector's work, of which this is the sixth volume. A former books columnist at Harper's Magazine, Moser is now a columnist at The New York Times Book Review, and is currently at work on�the�authorized biography of Susan Sontag. He lives in the Netherlands.

Katrina Dodson's work has appeared in�Granta,�McSweeney's, and�Two Lines. She is a PhD candidate in Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkeley.

Clarice Lispector is one of the greatest cultural treasures of Brazil

Clarice Lispector is one of the greatest cultural treasures of Brazil. Her razor-sharp insight into the ordinary (and the extraordinary) aspects of the human condition was unmatched, and her writing honored the Portuguese language with a beauty and nobility that is difficult to match. Having grown up as a devoted reader of her stories and novels, to which I return constantly in search of unqualified aesthetic pleasure, I was very happy to see this beautifully produced and magisterially translated volume. Lispector's voice is embedded in my mind through her chiseled and astonishingly beautiful Portuguese, but I have to say that I cannot imagine her stories better translated than they are here. In sampling a few of my old favorites, I was thoroughly convinced that, had Lispector written in English, this is how she would have written. I sincerely hope that this new book will bring many readers to her unique universe and help to secure a place for Lispector among a wider audience and next to those with whom she truly belongs: Jorge Luis Borges, Virginia Woolf, Joyce, and Kafka, to name a few. She is an artist of the greatest magnitude and of universal scope.

A LITERARY GEM

As a prolific reader, for some reason there are a few things I rarely do, for no particularly logical reason, over the last 30 years or so > Buy and read novellas; books which are collections of an author/s short stories and rarely books that were originally written in a foreign language and later reinterpreted into English. I incidentally happened to read an article a few weeks ago about a mid-twentieth century author (Clarice Lispector) which left me beguiled. The newspaper article also referenced this particular book (collection of short stories) by Lispector, which would soon be released. I decided to buy it on a whim. What a great decision! I have been completely enthralled for the last week with the diversity, drama, wit, humor and human introspection in this brilliantly creative collection of stories. While the book will likely hold less appeal to younger readers (under 20 or so) I believe it will definitely hold interest for a wide diversity of mature readers (those among us with a few more years of life experience behind us to provide perspective).

Beautiful edition, lovingly compiled

No one starts a story off better than Clarice Lispector, one of my favorite authors. From the first story: "The clock strikes nine. A loud, sonorous peal, followed by gentle chiming, an echo" to the last: "I doubt that death will come. Death? Could it be that the days, so long, will end?"

I'm not satisfied that those are the best examples. There are much better ones, but I couldn't be bothered to type them out because they just don't stop. The beginning just seamlessly flows into the rest of the story.

Many of the stories here are more traditional than her longer works, less experimental. But there are definite exceptions, like "Brasilia," where she effortlessly paints impressionist atmosphere rather than realist portraiture. She's so skilled at writing a mood, a fear, a hope, more than a straightforward narrative arc. Philosophical, charming, witty, stark, surprising, unusual. She deserves mention alongside Borges, Italo Calvino, Chekov.

I finished The Complete Stories a few days ago but couldn't bring myself to write a review because it feels like the book deserves much more than that. It really does. And the translator, Katrina Dodson, did an incredible job, although her translations made me wish I could read Portuguese. The edition is beautifully designed and crafted. The intro focused a bit more on her looks than I liked. Oh well.

The original book on limerence was written by Dorothy Tenov back in the 70's who was the first to describe the condition. Nothing much of substance has been published since until this book which builds upon Tenov's work, utilizing many resources from academic papers to feedback from sufferers. Whilst it is perhaps more academic in its writing and aimed more towards practitioners for which it is essential reading, many limerent sufferers would also benefit from its contents which includes strategies for coping with limerence.

I hope more of the therapeutic community become aware of limerence and its debilitating effects, too few are up to speed on this condition and how to best help their clients. I think part of this is the name, limerence. Its a turn off for many people, why not just call it what it is, obsessional addictive attraction?

Finally, I know what 'it' is...

I stumbled upon "Love and Limerence: Harness the Limbic Brain" pretty much in the same way that I stumbled upon the Limerence concept itself. Both instances were illuminating watershed moments. I read the book in a flash and savoured every page. As much as it is written for academics and professionals, it has huge appeal to laymen too. The vignettes are numerous and apt, directed at all of us who have endured this condition with no name. The authors are legitimate authorities on this fascinating topic. Not only have they taken Tennov's work further, they have also chosen to explore the flipside of the Limerence experience. It is refreshing to be know that potential pathologies can be channeled positively if we are shown how. Dr Willmott & al end the book on a high note by offering diverse therapeutic approaches that Limerent experiencers should consider for healing and growth.

About the Author
Marina Korsakova-Kreyn, a professional pianist and scholar in music cognition, was trained as a classical pianist in Russia. Upon graduation from Nizhny Novgorod Conservatory she worked there as a staff pianist. Following her interest in philosophy, Marina took two years in physics and mathematics at Nizhny Novgorod University and eventually became a student in cognition and neuroscience at The University of Texas at Dallas. Music was always at the center of her studies. As a passionate music educator, Marina designed and presented lecture-performances on Time-Space of Music at art and architecture schools in the US, Canada, and Russia. These lectures became the foundation for her research in quasi-spatial properties of music that predicted modality transcendence in melodic perception. This prediction has recently received the supporting evidence from two imaging studies conducted at McGill University. Her PhD dissertation is an original study in navigation in tonal space. In this study Marina proposes a new model of emotional processing in music. The Universe of Music is her first book.

The Universe of Music is a comprehensive overview of the visual mechanisms the brain uses to make sense out of and create music. Korsakov-Kreyn takes the concept of time-space and applies it to music: she illuminates the direct relationship between certain proportional laws of architecture and the proportional laws of the Pythagorean intervals of tones in music, and how these tonal proportions are arranged in time to create a sense of meaning and therefore experienced emotion within all of us. She also gives a historical account of Western music, elucidating the theoretical differences between each musical era from the time of Gregorian chants to post-Second Viennese School. No previous knowledge of these terms or knowledge of music theory is required however - a "Useful Terms" section is provided as a reference. She incorporates into her essay numerous scientific studies examining music from this spatial perspective along with other relevant topics in music cognition. All studies and related readings are catalogued, allowing for further exploration by the reader. Physicists will enjoy the String Theory references, linguists will be enlightened upon reading about the relationship between language and music, and cognitive psychologists and neuroscientists will see the mind from a new perspective.

About the Author
Albert M. Craig is the Harvard-Yenching Research Professor of History Emeritus at Harvard University, where he has taught since 1959. A graduate of Northwestern University, he received his Ph.D. at Harvard University. He has studied at Strasbourg University and at Kyoto, Keio, and Tokyo universities in Japan. He is the author of Choshu in the Meiji Restoration (1961), The Heritage of Japanese Civilization (2011), and, with others, of East Asia, Tradition and Transformation (1989). He is the editor of Japan, A Comparative View (1973) and co-editor of Personality in Japanese History (1970), Civilization and Enlightenment: The Early Thought of Fukuzawa Yukichi (2009). He was the director of the Harvard-Yenching Institute. He has also been a visiting professor at Kyoto and Tokyo universities. He has received Guggenheim, Fulbright, and Japan Foundation Fellowships. In 1988 he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government.

William A. Graham is Albertson Professor of Middle Eastern Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and O’Brian Professor of Divinity and Dean in the Faculty of Divinity at Harvard University, where he has taught for thirty-four years. He has directed the Center for Middle Eastern Studies and chaired the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, the Committee on the Study of Religion, and the Core Curriculum Committee on Foreign Cultures. He received his BA in Comparative Literature from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, an A.M. and Ph.D. in History of Religion from Harvard, and studied also in G�ttingen, T�bingen, Lebanon, and London. He is former chair of the Council on Graduate Studies in Religion (U.S. and Canada). In 2000 he received the quinquennial Award for Excellence in Research in Islamic History and Culture from the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference. He has held John Simon Guggenheim and Alexander von Humboldt research fellowships and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Among his publications are Beyond the Written Word: Oral Aspects of Scripture in the History of Religion (1987); Divine Word and Prophetic Word in Early Islam (1977–ACLS History of Religions Prize, 1978); and Three Faiths, One God (co-authored, 2003).

Donald Kagan is Sterling Professor of History and Classics at Yale University, where he has taught since 1969. He received the A.B. degree in history from Brooklyn College, the M.A. in classics from Brown University, and the Ph.D. in history from Ohio State University. During 1958—1959 he studied at the American School of Classical Studies as a Fulbright Scholar. He has received three awards for undergraduate teaching at Cornell and Yale. He is the author of a history of Greek political thought, The Great Dialogue (1965); a four-volume history of the Peloponnesian war, The Origins of the Peloponnesian War (1969); The Archidamian War (1974); The Peace of Nicias and the Sicilian Expedition (1981); The Fall of the Athenian Empire (1987); a biography of Pericles, Pericles of Athens and the Birth of Democracy (1991); On the Origins of War (1995); and The Peloponnesian War (2003). He is coauthor, with Frederick W. Kagan, of While America Sleeps (2000). With Brian Tierney and L. Pearce Williams, he is the editor of Great Issues in Western Civilization, a collection of readings. He was awarded the National Humanities Medal for 2002 and was chosen by the National Endowment for the Humanities to deliver the Jefferson Lecture in 2004.

Steven Ozment is McLean Professor of Ancient and Modern History at Harvard University. He has taught Western Civilization at Yale, Stanford, and Harvard. He is the author of eleven books. The Age of Reform, 1250—1550 (1980) won the Schaff Prize and was nominated for the 1981 National Book Award. Five of his books have been selections of the History Book Club: Magdalena and Balthasar: An Intimate Portrait of Life in Sixteenth Century Europe (1986), Three Behaim Boys: Growing Up in Early Modern Germany (1990), Protestants: The Birth of A Revolution (1992), The Burgermeister’s Daughter: Scandal in a Sixteenth Century German Town (1996), and Flesh and Spirit: Private Life in Early Modern Germany (1999). His most recent publications are Ancestors: The Loving Family of Old Europe (2001), A Mighty Fortress: A New History of the German People (2004), and “Why We Study Western Civ,” The Public Interest 158 (2005).

Frank M. Turner is John Hay Whitney Professor of History at Yale University and Director of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, where he served as University Provost from 1988 to 1992. He received his B.A. degree at the College of William and Mary and his Ph.D. from Yale. He has received the Yale College Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching. He has directed a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute. His scholarly research has received the support of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Guggenheim Foundation and the Woodrow Wilson Center. He is the author of Between Science and Religion: The Reaction to Scientific Naturalism in Late Victorian England (1974), The Greek Heritage in Victorian Britain (1981), which received the British Council Prize of the Conference on British Studies and the Yale Press Governors Award, Contesting Cultural Authority: Essays in Victorian Intellectual Life (1993), and John Henry Newman: The Challenge to Evangelical Religion (2002). He has also contributed numerous articles to journals and has served on the editorial advisory boards of The Journal of Modern History, Isis, and Victorian Studies. He edited The Idea of a University by John Henry Newman (1996), Reflections on the Revolution in France by Edmund Burke (2003), and Apologia Pro Vita Sua and Six Sermons by John Henry Newman (2008). Between 1996 and 2006 he served as a Trustee of Connecticut College and between 2004 and 2008 as a member of the Connecticut Humanities Council. In 2003, Professor Turner was appointed Director of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University.

A veteran astronaut weighs in on queries ranging from how the universe began to how to pee in a spacesuit. The hundreds of questions are grouped in broadly topical chapters but otherwise arranged in no particular order. They cover an astronaut's qualifications, training, and work; what it feels like to travel into space and to live there; the nature of the universe and our near-future prospects for exploring it. Jones draws on his experiences on four space shuttle flights between 1994 and 2001 for his answers, which are usually fairly lengthy, though he plainly leaves a few things out: if "NASA astronauts wait an average of five years between missions," why were his so much closer together? Will he ever go to space again? "Not if I want to stay married." Still, he often drills down to the nitty-gritty: what's in the International Space Station's tool kit? A long list, beginning with vise grips and including "a crowbar, a fiber optic boroscope, torque tip drivers." He doesn't trumpet personal opinions, but they can be found in lukewarm responses to questions about space camp and space tourism, as well as a cogent argument for continuing our exploration of the high frontier: "We will be struck again by an asteroid." Plenty of small space photos and snapshots of the author and other astronauts at work and play are interspersed. Fine browsing for space geeks. (Nonfiction. 11-14)

About the Author
Tom Jones is a planetary scientist, space consultant, professional speaker, and veteran astronaut who completed four space shuttle missions and three spacewalks. Jones has authored six books, including Sky Walking: An Astronaut's Memoir, and he writes for aerospace magazines such as Air & Space Smithsonian, Aerospace America, Popular Mechanics, and The Planetary Report. A senior research scientist for IHMC, he appears regularly on television news as an expert commentator for space exploration and science stories.

Great for all levels of reading and curiosity!

My son declared that in 2040, he would be heading to Mars in the new Z-2 Spacesuit. I will take him at his word, as he is an incredibly curious and pretty intelligent 10 year old. When this book popped up, I jumped at the chance to grab it. I am so glad I did.

The sections are all question and answers. Each question is simple and one or two sentences. Each answer can be one or a few paragraphs. The photos sprinkled in are a nice break. The level of reading is perfect and simple, but not so simple that a kid that's 8-12 will be bored. If they truly want to know any of these things, they will be intrigued. The sections cover all aspects from Aspiring to Space, Training and Getting to Space, different ships, living and working in space, risks, returning from space and coming back to earth and a few more.

After devouring the first chapter about aspirations, education, and all things on how to become an astronaut, my son put the book down only to eat dinner. Then back to the book. He would stop reading and talked to us about space food. Then he would come later and talk to me about duct tape in space, using Russia as a space taxi of sorts and so on.

We looked up information on training at Johnson Space Center. We read up on old missions and names, astronauts and space ships. This book continues to lead us down a rabbit hole of information and we are enjoying the heck out of it. I highly recommend this book for younger kids that would enjoy hearing their parents read a little out loud here and there. For older kids who might not love to read, this book gives great opportunity to just pick up and put down at intervals, or read just a little a night.

The Recommended Age Range Should be 10 to Grandma!

Back in the late 60s or early 70s, I was a student majoring in Physics at California State University, Long Beach. A few astronauts came to the college to talk about the space program. There was a huge audience and everyone was spellbound. Although we were all brilliant and looking forward to the future, we seemed to be most interested in how they went to the bathroom. We all turned into fourth graders. I seem to remember something about a big ball of urine that broke free and floated around the cabin. I've Googled it, but can't seem to find anything specific about the incident during that era, but it's definitely etched in the folds of my brain.

So, when I was given the opportunity to review this book, I figured I'd skim through and then share it with some of my teenaged friends. Well, I'm not giving up this book. It is one of the most fascinating reads ever. Each chapter -- and, yes, there's a lot of information about peeing and pooping -- is incredibly entertaining and educational. Tom Jones shares his earliest memories of first becoming interested in the space program, through his studies and applications for the program, his experiences in space, information about other flights and programs, and the future. At no point does he talk down to the reader. There is enough science plus enough day-to-day information to engage anyone.

I sometimes wish I'd pursued a spot in the space program, but I get car sick -- when I'm driving -- so that probably would have been a bad idea.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. My title speaks my feelings. This book can be enjoyed by anyone from 10 to 100.
